Box score, play-by-play
MONMOUTH, Ore. – Down 13-4 in the second game of Thursday night's volleyball match, Seattle Pacific coach
Chris Johnson didn't talk strategy with his team during a timeout.
He figured the Falcons needed to hear something different.
“I said, 'Hey, we're in a deep hole; we just have to get back into the swing of things, get back in our groove and play our system,' Johnson said. “I said, 'Just relax and play – just have fun.'”
That advice was taken to heart in a big way.
Cailin Fellows slammed 18 kills,
Shelby Swanson put up her third straight double-double, and SPU, sparked by a phenomenal comeback in that second game with Kendall Langdon serving the final five points, swept Western Oregon in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest.
Scores in WOU's New P.E. Building were 25-18, 26-24, 25-22. It was Seattle Pacific's first sweep of the season.
The Falcons (6-9, 3-3 GNAC) won their second straight and handed the Wolves (10-4, 3-2 GNAC) their second consecutive loss. Western Oregon had been the final unbeaten team in conference play until falling at Western Washington last Saturday. SPU was coming off of a five-game victory against Northwest Nazarene.
Senior outside hitter Fellows (Edmonds, Wash. / Edmonds-Woodway HS) had a season-high .302 hitting percentage on 18 kills, five errors and 43 attacks.
Senior setter Swanson (Kennewick, Wash. / Kamiakin HS) had 36 assists and 18 digs. She now has seven double-doubles for the season and 24 for her career.
Sophomore outside hitter
Jessica Miller put down 10 kills and had just one error for a season-high .450 hitting percentage.
The Falcons conclude the week with a visit to Saint Martin's on Saturday night at 7.
Except for a 6-4 deficit and four ties, the last of those at 11-11, Seattle Pacific led most of the way in Thursday's opening game.
But the next one was well on the way to going into Western Oregon's column. The Wolves ran off seven straight points after spotting SPU a 2-0 edge, and extended the lead to 13-4. The Falcons came back within two at 22-20, but Western Oregon got to quadruple game point at 24-20.
“We started coming back early enough, getting within five, then it was four, and it was like, 'Hey, we're not out of this yet,'” Johnson said. “But when we were down 24-20, it didn't seem like it was going to happen at that point.”
Junior middle blocker
Nikki Lowell (Claremont, Calif.) got a kill for 24-21 and a sideout. From there, sophomore Langdon (Irvine, Calif.) took over the serve, and SPU ran off five straight points to take the game: a bad set by the Wolves, a kill by Fellows, an attempted tip by Western Oregon that went into the net for 24-24, then back-to-back kills by Fellows.
“We got them out of system, and Kendall has a great jump float serve, and she brought it tonight,” Johnson said.
Seattle Pacific trailed just twice in Game 3, the last time at 11-10 before running off five straight points. But every time the Falcons seemed on the verge of pulling away, the Wolves rallied.
SPU was up 18-13; Western Oregon climbed back to 20-20. The Falcons made it 22-20; WOU tied it at 22-22. Finally, SPU went up for good on a kill by Miller. A Western Oregon kill attempt went wide, giving the Falcons their first try at match point, and Miller took care of that with a kill.
SPU hit .241 for the match, including a strong start of .333 in Game 1. In the second game, the Falcons were hitting minus-.231 at the time they were down 13-4, then hit .400 the rest of that game.
The Wolves finished at .179, including just .073 in the third game.
