LACEY, Wash. – The Seattle Pacific Falcons have been finding their hitting groove much more regularly of late.
They're finding the volleyball win column much more regularly, too.
Cailin Fellow had 12 kills, and
Jackie Arnold hit a career-high .800 on Saturday night, helping the Falcons to a three-game sweep of Saint Martin's in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match.
Scores in Marcus Pavilion were 25-19, 25-18, 25-14.
SPU (7-9, 4-3 GNAC) won a season-high third straight match and posted its second consecutive sweep, the first of which was Thursday night's victory at Western Oregon. The Falcons beat Saint Martin's (4-7, 2-4 GNAC) for the 21
st straight time.
SPU is back home this coming week, playing host to Alaska Anchorage on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Alaska Fairbanks next Saturday at 3 p.m. in Brougham Pavilion.
Senior outside hitter Fellows (Edmonds, Wash. / Edmonds-Woodway HS) hit.300, following up on her .302 performance at Western Oregon. She also had three of the Falcons' 10 service aces.
“It helps when your top outside hitter hits .300 for two matches in a row,” Seattle Pacific head coach
Chris Johnson said. “We've just had continued good, steady play – just solid hitting, and we passed pretty well tonight. We're starting to serve a lot tougher, too.”
Freshman middle blocker Arnold (Orange, Calif.) had four kills and no errors on five attacks – her sixth match of the season with no errors. Her previous career high for hitting was .615 (9 kills,1 errors, 13 attacks) in a four-game victory at Chaminade on Aug. 31.
“I can always improve – everyone can always learn and improve,” Arnold said. “But I'm very happy with the way I'm playing. I've been error-free in a lot of matches, so hopefully, I can keep that up.”
Seattle Pacific had a season-low 12 attack errors, put down 38 kills on just 91 attacks, and hit .286 – its third match in a row and sixth in the last eight above .200. Saint Martin's hit.134.
“We definitely played really well tonight,” Arnold said. “We were working on coming back (from Thursday's win) to do a second sweep if we had the opportunity, and we jumped on them very early in the first game.”
Senior setter
Shelby Swanson (Kennewick, Wash. / Kamiakin HS) had 31 assists. Sophomore setter Kendall Langdon (Irvine, Calif.) served a career-high three aces. SPU's 10 aces was its second-highest mark of the season. The only better total was 11 against Cal State Stanislaus on Sept. 8.
Junior middle blocker
Nikki Lowell (Claremont, Calif.) hit .357 with seven kills.
Seattle Pacific led all the way in Game 1 after scoring the first three points, and most of the way in Game 2, trailing just once at 3-2.
The Saints bolted to a 5-2 lead in the third game. But the Falcons ran off four straight to turn a 6-4 deficit into an 8-6 lead and never trailed again, effectively sealing the deal with a 6-0 surge to go up 13-7.
“Starts of games are funny like that sometimes – you don't feel like you're playing bad, they just had some things to their way early,” Johnson said. “We were able to put a good long run on them.”
SPU is back home this coming week, playing host to Alaska Anchorage on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Alaska Fairbanks next Saturday at 3 p.m. in Brougham Pavilion.
