SEATTLE –
Shelby Swanson went out as one of the best setters in conference history on Saturday night, and made sure that fellow senior
Cailin Fellows got into the milestone spotlight, too.
Swanson had 38 assists to move into the top five on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's all-time list for that category, and Fellows concluded her career with15 kills as Seattle Pacific wound up the volleyball season with a three-game sweep of Simon Fraser.
Scores in Brougham Pavilion were 31-29, 25-18, 25-22.
The Falcons (14-13, 11-7 GNAC) went 10-4 in the second half of the season after a 4-9 start and tied with Alaska Anchorage for fourth place in the final conference standings. Simon Fraser finished 4-22, 1-17 GNAC.
Saturday's assist total gave Swanson 3,849, moving her past Northwest Nazarene's Mindy Swanson (no relation), who had 3,742 from 2000-03. Swanson also finished No. 3 on Seattle Pacific's all-time assist list. She had 1,105 of those assists this season, an average of 10.83 per game.
In addition to her assists on Saturday, Swanson (Kennewick, Wash. / Kamiakin HS) came up with 10 digs for her 15
th double-double of the season and the 32nd in her four years at SPU.
The 15 kills for senior outside hitter Fellows (Edmonds, Wash. / Edmonds-Woodway HS) pushed her past 900 for her career. She finished with 912, hammering 672 of those during her two seasons with the Falcons. She also tied her career high with three service aces on Saturday, and finished with 986.5 points.
“They both played really well, which is want you want to see on Senior Night,” SPU head coach
Chris Johnson said.
Sophomore opposite
Madi Cavell (Keizer, Ore.) had 13 kills and logged her third career double-double by coming up with 10 digs. Sophomore libero
Brianna Leenders (Portland, Ore.) led the Falcons with 13 digs.
The Falcons started slowly, training for almost all of the opening game, once by as many as five points at 17-12. They had three game points against them at 24-21, but climbed into a 24-24 tie, getting the equalizer on a combined block by Fellows, sophomore outside hitter
Jessica Miller (Fife, Wash. / Fife HS) and freshman middle blocker
Jackie Arnold (Anaheim, Calif.).
The Clan also had game points at 25-24 and 26-25 and SPU had an opportunity at 27-26. Finally, with Simon Fraser up 29-28, the Falcons got the last three points: a kill by Cavell, one by Fellows, and a Clan attack that went into the net.
“I was really proud of the way they battled in that game, fighting off game points. They showed the character they've shown all year,” Johnson said.
Seattle Pacific took command of Game 2 with a 7-1 run that snapped a 12-12 tie. The Falcons seemed on their way in Game 3, up 20-15. But Simon Fraser came all the way back within two at 22-20 and 24-22 before one final kill by Cavell sealed the match.
Arnold had her eighth error-free match of the season, putting down five kills on 12 attacks for a team-high .417 hitting percentage. She also had a team-high six block assists. Fellows hit .286, and SPU finished with a .217 mark as a team.
The three-game sweep was Seattle Pacific's sixth of the season, all during the final 14 matches.
“I'm really proud of the way we were able to turn it around,” Johnson said. “We lost to the top four teams at home, but then we beat three of those teams (Western Oregon, Central Washington and Alaska Anchorage) at their place.
“I'm excited about the future of this team,” he added. “We have up-and-coming players who are getting better and better.”
