LAIE, Hawaii – Tournament Most Valuable Player
David Downs scored five of his 14 points in the first four minutes Saturday helping ninth-ranked Seattle Pacific tally the game's opening 12 points en route to a 71-54 win over BYU-Hawaii in the GNAC/PacWest Challenge.
The Falcons (4-0) won their second straight game at the Cannon BYU's Cannon Activities Center following Friday's 73-53 victory over Hawaii Pacific.
After
Andy Poling started the game with a jumper, Downs made a layup and then a 3-pointer. Corey Hutsen followed with a basket and
Riley Stockton nailed a trey to put SPU up 12-0 with 14:19 left in the first half.
The Seasiders (0-3) didn't scored until 6:49 into the game when Brady Hurst made the first of two free throws. They missed their first 11 shots from the field before Pablo Coro scored on a layup with 11:54 on the clock and SPU leading 17-3.
That margin grew to as many as 21 points in favor of the Falcons, who led 36-15 at halftime.
SPU made 44 percent of its first-period shots (14 of 32) while limiting the Seasiders to 21 percent on 5 of 24 shooting.
BYUH never drew closer than 12 points during the second half.
Downs hit 5 of 9 attempts from the floor and distributed six assists. He tallied 12 points and four assists in Friday's win and was voted to the all-tournament team along with teammate
Patrick Simon.
Also making the all-tournament team were Mark McLaughlin of Central Washington, DeAndre Medlock of BYU-Hawaii and Malte Ziegenhagen of Hawaii Pacific.
Simon scored 12 points Saturday while Stockton and Poling had 10 apiece.
Bracken Funk was BYU's lone double-digit scorer with 10 points.
Senior
Scott Morse collected nine rebounds for the Falcons, who dominated the boards 48-29.
The SPU men visit Chico, Calif. next weekend for the Mac Martin Invitational where they meet San Francisco State on Friday at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday at 7:30 p.m. the Falcons clash with 20th-ranked Chico State, the tournament host.
