SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific Falcons used a narrow four point halftime lead as motivation and reeled off a 17-0 run early in the second half, blowing open the game and beating Academy of Art in their men's basketball season opener at the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic on Friday night, 85-65.

Junior guard David Downs (Kirkland, Wash. / Bellevue Christian HS) led four Falcons in double digit scoring with 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field in Brougham Pavlion. Jobi Wall (Arvada, Colo.) had 16 point. Patrick Simon (Ephrata, Wash. / Ephrata HS) and Cory Hutsen (Sammamish, Wash. / Skyline HS) added 10 points apiece.

Ameer Shamsud-din of the Urban Knights hit a shot at the halftime buzzer to make it 34-30 at the break. After shooting only 33 percent from the field during the first half, the Falcons hit 58 percent (15 of 26) in the second half, racking up 51 points in the final 20 minutes. SPU finished at 44 percent (26 of 59) for the game.

Academy of Art scored the first two points of the second half, getting within 34-32. But SPU pulled away after that, using their 17-0 run to extend the lead to 55-34. The run included three consecutive 3-pointers: one each from Wall, Downs and Simon Patrick.

The Urban Knights finally broke the drought when Mike Joritsma made a lay-up with 10:13 left in the game. Shamsud-din led the Urban Knights in scoring with a game-high 27 points.

The Falcons wind up the tournament on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Azusa Pacific, a 102-99 overtime victor against Central Washington earlier on Friday. Central and Academy of Art play at 3 p.m.
