SEATTLE – Fortunately for the Falcons, Jobi Wall's pre-game frustrations didn't carry over into the game.

“Honestly tonight I did not shoot well during warm-ups and my shot didn't feel great,” Wall described. “But I got a couple to go down and was able to build some confidence.”

Wall poured in a career-high 28 points Thursday, including eight 3-pointers that led the fifth-ranked Seattle Pacific men to a 78-72 Great Northwest Athletic Conference basketball overtime victory over Western Oregon at Brougham Pavilion.

A senior forward from Arvada, Colo., Wall drained 8 of 10 treys as part of a 9-for-12 overall shooting performance. He came within one of the school's single-game record of nine 3-pointers.

“It was fun to see some shots go in,” Wall said of his impressive total of treys. “I knew they were adding up a little bit towards the end, but I had no idea what the number was.”

Coach Ryan Looney was thrilled that Wall made as many 3-pointers as he did.

“On the offensive end he carried us all night. He had a big night tonight and we needed every one of them.”

Western Oregon forced the overtime, tying the game at 66-66 on an uncontested putback shot by Rodney Webster after Jordan Wiley missed a potential game-winning 3-point attempt from the top of the key. Webster jumped for the rebound off the front rim and remained airborne to toss the ball in as the buzzer sounded.

Webster opened the overtime with a layup before SPU responded with nine straight points. Patrick Simon and Wall ignited the run with back-to-back 3-pointers and the Falcons converted 6 of 8 free throws during the final 1:51 to secure the win.

SPU outscored the Wolves 12-6 during the extra session.

The second-place Falcons (14-2) improved to 7-1 in conference play. Their lone league loss was a 66-56 home setback against first-place Western Washington, which is undefeated in eight GNAC contests. The second-ranked Vikings host the rematch on Feb. 2 in Bellingham.

Western Oregon (8-8) dropped to 3-5 in GNAC games.

Simon (Ephrata, Wash./Ephrata HS/Washington State) was the only other Falcon in double digits with 20 points, 12 of them coming on 3-pointers.

Kolton Nelson netted 13 points to pace the Wolves, who got 11 apiece from Webster, Tyler Funk and James Gehring. Wiley added 10.

Wall hit three treys during an 18-4 run early in the second half that turned a six-point deficit into a 48-40 advantage for the Falcons. His 3-pointer with 11:32 completed the surge. That lead grew as large as 13 points before WOU rallied.

“Our effort was better in the second half. Our guys gave up some uncontested shots early in the game in the first half and were able to clean that up in the second,” Looney said.

“Basically the difference in the game for us tonight was that our effort defensively for the first 13 minutes of the second half changed. During that time we only gave up 10 points. That was the difference.”

The Wolves went on a 13-2 run, including 10 consecutive points to draw within 63-62 on Funk's 3-pointer with 1:21 remaining. SPU's David Downs converted two free throws with 59 seconds to play but Western got a basket by Nelson with 5.3 seconds showing on the clock.

Downs was quickly fouled and proceeded to hit the second of two charity shots for a 66-64 Falcons lead with 4.2 seconds remaining that set up Webster's game-tying tip.

SPU shot 52 percent after halftime (13 of 25) to finish at 45 percent for the game (23 of 51). Western shot 43 percent for the game (26 of 26), cooling down to 37 percent (13 of 35) in the second half and overtime.

WOU became the first team to out-rebound the Falcons, posting a 37-32 advantage on the boards. Seattle Pacific entered the game ranked No. 5 nationally with a plus-11.3 per game rebounding advantage.

The Wolves led by as many as six points in the first half. Their margin was 23-20 before SPU scored the next seven points. Wall capped the surge with a 3-pointer that provided a 27-23 edge with 6:24 to play in the half.

Western responded with a run of its own with nine unanswered points, the last seven from Gehring, to go ahead 32-27.

Simon halted the WOU spree with a 3-pointer followed by a Gehring layup that ended the first-half scoring with the Wolves ahead 34-30.

WOU shot 52 percent in the opening period (13 of 25) while holding the Falcons at 39 percent (10 of 26). The Wolves made 3 of 4 shots from 3-points range and SPU was 7-for-17 beyond the arc during the first half.

The SPU men remain at home to host Saint Martin's on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the annual Homecoming Game at Brougham Pavilion.
