SEATTLE – A career night for
David Downs went for naught as his lay-up attempt at the buzzer slid off the backboard, allowing Dixie State to escape with a 90-88 overtime upset of No. 2-ranked Seattle Pacific men in the final game of the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic on Saturday night in Brougham Pavilion.
Downs poured in a career-best 34 points and
Cory Hutsen maneuvered inside for a career-high 24 for the Falcons, who fell to 4-1.
Tournament MVP DeQuan Thompson led the Red Storm (2-0) with 21 points, including three vital free throws during the extra period.
Dixie State, the last non-conference visitor to defeat SPU three years ago, reeled off six straight points to go ahead for good, 85-81. Kimball Payne, who had dribbled the length of the court to tie the game at the regulation buzzer, converted underneath and Thompson hit twice from the line with 2:45 remaining.
A steal and two foul shots by Zach Robbins with 12 seconds to go seemed to put Dixie comfortably in front, 90-85. But Downs drilled a deep 3-pointer and two missed Red Storm free throws gave Downs a last-ditch drive from right side, his double-pump try going awry.
The game featured 16 lead changes. A Hutsen bucket capped a 7-0 spurt to put SPU on top, 64-58. Dixie knotted it at 68-all following a Thompson 3-pointer and two Dalton Groskreutz free throws.
Downs hit 10 of 17 from the field, 4 of 7 on treys, and made all 10 attempts from the line. Hutson tallied 14 of his points came after halftime.
Dixie State shot 53.4 percent from the field to the Falcons' 46 percent. The Red Storm attempted 11 more free throws (21-32) but SPU all but negated that by converting 20 of 21.
Seattle Pacific trailed much of the opening period. After the Falcons pulled in front, 31-30, Dixie State quickly responded with an 11-4 spurt. Louis Garrett came off the bench to score six of the points, including a fast-break lay-up to make it 41-35.
Led by Thompson, the Red Storm blazed away, shooting 68 percent in the first half, including 5 of 7 from downtown. The Falcons, just 2-13 beyond the arc, stayed close, thanks to Downs' 19 and nine Dixie turnovers.
Downs, teammate
Patrick Simon, Michael Brown of Colorado Christian and Mark McLaughlin of Central Washington also made the all-tournament team.
Central Washington defeated Colorado Christian, 95-90, in the tournament's other second-round game.
The Falcons resume play Friday in Ellensburg against BYU Hawaii in the GNAC / PacWest Challenge.
