MONMOUTH, Ore. –
Madi Cavell totaled 23 kills, and
Nikki Lowell had 17 – including the match-clincher in Game 5 – as Seattle Pacific beat Western Oregon in a Great Northwest Athletic Association volleyball match on Saturday night.
Scores in the New P.E. Building were 25-20, 23-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-10.
It was the second time this season the Falcons (14-10, 10-6 GNAC) went to the five-game limit against the Wolves (10-16, 7-9 GNAC). Seattle Pacific has won five of its six matches that have gone the distance this fall.
SPU was down 7-6 in the final game when it put together three straight points – a kill by junior outside hitter Cavell (Keizer, Ore.), a kill by sophomore middle blocker
Jackie Arnold (Anaheim, Calif.), and a Cavel service ace – for a 9-7 lead.
Another three-point run expanded an 11-9 lead to 14-9. Western Oregon staved off one match point, but Lowell took care of it on the next opportunity, with junior setter
Sara Biondi picking up her 52nd and final assist.
"We were just steady in the fifth game, and didn't make too many errors," Falcons head coach
Chris Johnson said. "We did a good job offensively throughout the night. We had them out of system a lot. There were a few things we went into the match trying to do, and what wound up being really clear was we were being effective from the outside."
The 52 assists for Biondi (Sacramento, Calif.) was her best total in an SPU uniform. Her career high is 58, set in 2010 against Gonzaga when she was at Washington State. It also tied junior teammate Kendall Langdon for the most by an Seattle Pacific player this season.
In addition, Biondi had a career-high 12 digs to complete her first double-double as a Falcon. Her previous best was 10 against Eastern Washington while at WSU.
Cavell made it a double-double – her 11
th of the year and 14
th of her career – with 15 digs. Junior libero Brianne Leenders had 19 digs. Lowell had six block assists and hit a team-leading .483 with just three errors on 29 swings.
"They couldn't stop Nikki, and Madi was able to kill a lot of balls down the line," Johnson said.
Along with Thursday's four-game win at Saint Martin's, the Falcons went 10-7 outside of Brougham Pavilion – 7-4 in true road matches, and 3-3 on neutral courts.
Seattle Pacific concludes the regular season at home next week, playing host to Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday and Alaska Anchorage on Saturday, both at 7 p.m. in Brougham Pavilion. The Saturday match will be Senior Night in honor of Lowell and outside hitter
Nicole Schwend.
