ANAHEIM, Calif. –
David Downs scored 10 of his game-high 29 points during a 12-point first-half run Saturday that put second-ranked Seattle Pacific in control en route to a 72-58 win over Lindenwood on the second day of the Disney Tip-Off Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center.
Downs made 8 of 12 shots from the field, including 5-for-7 accuracy on 3-pointers. The senior point guard converted 8 of 9 free throws.
Sophomore
Brendan Carroll contributed a career-high 12 points for the Falcons, who also got 10 from
Riley Stockton.
Lindenwood made its first three shots, including a pair of 3-pointers from Michael Boos, to jump out to an 8-2 lead three minutes into the contest.
The Falcons missed their first three shots and hit just 1 of 6 to open the game. Their next three attempts went in, starting a run of nine unanswered points that provided a permanent lead.
The Lions drew within 14-12 on two free throws from Sam Mader with 10:03 left in the first half. They would not score again for over five minutes while SPU reeled off 12 straight points.
Downs started the spree with 10 consecutive points, on back-to-back treys and two layups. When
Cory Hutsen's jumper dropped in at 5:02, the Falcons led 26-12.
SPU owned a 39-24 advantage at halftime and the Lions never got closer than 13 points during the second half. The Falcons largest lead was 29 points, at 60-38 with 12:40 left to play.
The Falcons can be excused for their slow start to the game after a quick turnaround from the night before. They defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 79-65 late Friday and had less than 13 hours before Saturday's tip off.
Pairings for the six-team tournament are pre-set so no champion will be declared in the three-day event. SPU concludes the Classic on Sunday at 6:15 p.m. against Texas A&M International.
Lindenwood (0-2), from St. Charles, Mo., lost 74-57 to SPU's Great Northwest Athletic Conference rival Alaska Anchorage in Friday's opening round.
The Lions were led Saturday by 15 points from Boos. Mader and Garrett Reeg each chipped in 10 points.
The Falcons made 10 of 19 trey tries and shot 50 percent overall on field goals (21 of 42). They limited Lindenwood to 45 percent shooting (22 of 49).
