SEATTLE – Madi Cavell had a double-double of 15 kills and 10 digs on Thursday night, and put her 1,000th career point into the books, but Alaska Anchorage wound 18 more kills as a team to beat Seattle Pacific in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match.

Scores in Brougham Pavilion were 25-21, 20-25, 25-16, 25-20.

In last month's match at Anchorage, the Seawolves (15-3, 9-1 GNAC) finished with 14 more kills (43-29). On Thursday, they also came up with 10 more digs than did the Falcons (10-8, 4-6 GNAC).

"They played better defense than we did, and they outdug us," SPU coach Chris Johnson said. "Their hitters did a good job. We had Katelynn Zanders shut down early. But then she caught fire, which she is prone to do." (Zanders had 15 kills, 10 of those in the final two games.)

"We held Julia Mackey in check (just three kills), and we did a good job against one of their middles," Johnson added. "But we've gotta play better defense and dig more balls."

The Falcons will try to halt a three-match skid on Saturday night at 7 when they play host to Alaska Fairbanks in their only other home match of October.

The double-double for senior outside hitter Cavell (Keizer, Ore.) was her seventh of the season and the 21st of her career for Seattle Pacific.

Cavell started the night with 998.5 points. With the 15 kills, along with two service aces, two solo blocks, and two block assists, she had 20 points. That gave her 1,018.5.

Senior libero Brianna Leenders (Gresham, Ore.) had 22 digs, and senior setter Sara Biondi (Sacramento, Calif.) earned 27 assists. Sophomore middle blocker Maddi Hommes (Lynden, Wash. / Lynden HS) had five block assists.

SPU was down just 14-13 in the opening game when Alaska Anchorage put together a 6-1 run to take command. Then, the Falcons had the advantage for most of Game 2, ringing up five straight points to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 7-4 lead. They never trailed again, stretching it to as many as nine points at 23-14.

The Seawolves led for most of Game 3. Seattle Pacific put up the first four points of Game 4 and was still up 10-7 when Alaska Anchorage scored five in a row. Tied at 12-12, the Seawolves strung together another six in a row and led the rest of the way.

Seattle Pacific had 42 kills and hit .127 for the match. Alaska Anchorage finished with 60 kills and hit .220. The Seawolves also had 74 digs; the Falcons had 64.

"We played much better tonight. That was our best match in a couple weeks, for sure," Johnson said. "We got our butts kicked twice last week (in three-game road losses at Northwest Nazarene and Central Washington), but I was proud of the way we played tonight. We came out firing, we were focused, and we were intense from start to finish."

"I just felt like we had a fighting chance in every single game. That wasn't really the case last week."
