SEATTLE – Seattle Pacific's dominance on the backboards produced an impressive result on the scoreboard.
Riley Stockton scored 15 points and 20th-ranked Seattle Pacific limited Western Oregon to 17 second-half points on Saturday in a 79-47 Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball triumph at Brougham Pavilion.
The Falcons (18-4) avenged a 74-70 road loss to WOU on Jan. 4 in Monmouth. They won their seventh straight game to stay in first place in the standings with a 9-2 league mark.
SPU controlled the boards by a commanding 47-15 count led by nine rebounds from
Brendan Carroll (Brisbane, Australia) and eight from
Matt Borton (Yakima Wash./West Valley HS).
"We're finally defending and rebounding the way we are capable of," SPU coach
Ryan Looney exclaimed. "When you combine that with our ability to shoot it on offense, nights like tonight can happen."
Stockton (Spokane, Wash./Ferris HS) hit 6-of-9 shots and also contributed four assists, four rebounds and three steals. The junior guard compiled an average of 15.7 points during the last three games after scoring at a 6.5-point clip prior to that stretch.
He registered a career-high 16 points in a 92-87 double-overtime win at Montana State Billings on Jan. 25 and matched that total in Thursday's 76-53 home win over Saint Martin's.
Patrick Simon (Ephrata, Wash./WSU) tallied 13 points for the Falcons, who also got 10 from
Mitch Penner (Seattle, Wash./Kennedy HS).
The Wolves (11-10) dropped to 4-7 in GNAC play. They were led by the 10 points apiece of Jordan Wiley and Rodney Webster.
SPU shot 61 percent (17 of 28) in the first 20 minutes, including 5-for-10 on 3-pointers, to claim a 43-30 halftime lead.
That margin quickly increased with a 10-1 run during which WOU missed 10 straight shots to start the second half. When Wiley notched his team's first second-half basket on a 3-pointer at 13:12, they trailed 53-34.
The Wolves next field goal didn't come until the 7:37 mark and they went 1-for-17 before that time to fall behind 62-34.
Looney had a simple explanation for SPU's success in stymieing Western Oregon's offense.
"A lot of that has to do with the rebounding. Even if you are making mistakes defensively, if you can hold teams to one shot you've got a chance to prevent them from scoring much."
The Falcons got 10 consecutive points from their reserves late in the game to push the differential to a high of 34 points.
SPU shot 57 percent for the game (29 of 51) while limiting the Wolves to 31 percent (16 of 51). The visitors shot just 17 percent (5 of 29) after halftime.
The Falcons scored the game's opening eight points, capped by a pair of put-back baskets by Borton. They forced two turnovers and three WOU missed shots en route to the 8-0 lead 3:27 into the contest.
That margin steadily grew and reached 38-19 after a six-point SPU surge. Simon completed the run with a 3-pointer that provided the largest first-half lead with 4:05 left in the period.
The Wolves closed the half with an 11-6 run to draw within 13 points at intermission.
The SPU men travel to Alaska for a pair of games next week. They visit Anchorage on Thursday and Fairbanks on Saturday. Their next home game is Feb. 13.
"We have a lot of confidence right now, obviously playing as good as we've played all year," said Looney. "At this point we're in February and I would hope that our habits are good enough so regardless if we are playing at home in Seattle or on the road in Fairbanks, Alaska we can be the same team."
