MONMOUTH, Ore. -- McKayla Fricker walked off the track, looked at her mom, and handed her a box with a plaque in it.

"Here's another one," Fricker said, cutting loose with a big smile.

This wasn't just any plaque, though. It was a championship plaque -- the second one of the day for the Seattle Pacific senior.

And this wasn't just any championship. This was for Fricker's third straight victory in the 800 meters at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference track and field meet.

"Especially from freshman year (when she battled injuries and didn't even make the finals), just to be able to come back as a sophomore and win, and win for the third time in the 8 is surreal. It's unbelievable," Fricker said.

Fricker made the top step of the awards podium three times on Saturday at Western Oregon University's McArthur Field. She started her day by coming from behind on the last lap to win the 1,500 meters in a personal-best 4:28.19, then ran the anchor leg on the meet-ending 4x400 relay, with Kishia Mitchell, BryAnne Wochnick and Tasia Baldwin carrying the baton ahead of her on the way to a winning time of 3:50.05.

With fellow senior Mitchell's 400-meter victory factored in, Seattle Pacific finished with 121 points, good for fourth place in what became an extremely tight team race. Alaska Anchorage pulled out the title with 137, just four more than Western Washington and Northwest Nazarene, who deadlocked for second with 133.

"I'm really proud and excited for our seniors who came through real strong today, with Kishia winning a title, McKayla winning two, and BryAnne running the best meet of her college career," head coach Karl Lerum said.

McKayla Fricker's GNAC titles.
Of Fricker's three titles in the 800, Saturday's was her most dramatic.

Trailing by three seconds, sitting in fourth place after the first of two laps – and battling rain in her eyes – Fricker surged up the backstretch. She passed Alaska Anchorage's Susan Bick, passed Northwest Nazarene's Natalie Evans, passed Simon Fraser's Sarah Sawatzky coming around the curve, then outsprinted Sawatzky to the finish line.

Fricker's time of 2 minutes, 9.15 seconds was a scant 11 hundredths of a second ahead of Sawatzky (2:09.26), who won the GNAC indoor 800 ahead of Fricker in February.

"I don't know how I did that, honestly," Fricker said. "I definitely came out too slow in the first 400. I had had the wind and rain hitting me on the backstretch, and I could hardly see for a little bit.

"I finally opened my eyes and I was like, 'Hey, they're right there, let's go, let's go.'"

Fricker, ranked No. 3 nationally in the 800 with the NCAA Division II meet coming up on May 24-26 in Allendale, Mich., is the first Falcon in history to win three straight conference crowns in a single event and only the second to win three straight in anything. Ali Worthen went back-to-back-to-back in the heptathlon in 2011, 2012, and 2013.

"McKayla is without a doubt one of the finest athletes, not only in the country and in our conference, but by far one of the finest athletes I've ever been around," Falcons head coach Karl Lerum said. "I was getting a little anxious (during the 1,500 and 800), but she is just running so strong and so confident right now, I did believe she could pull them out."

Kishia Mitchell's GNAC titles.
While Fricker was a regular in the 800, Mitchell (Puyallup, Wash. / Rogers HS) was a first-timer in the 400, having focused on the 100 and 200 during her first three seasons. Mitchell made the most of it. She took the lead up the back, saw Simon Fraser sophomore Chantel Desch pull even going around the turn, surged back in front at the top of the homestretch, and hit the wire seven-hundredths of a second in front, 56.54-56.61.

"I was like, 'I'm going to get out hard and just run,'" Mitchell said. "I didn't know how close the Simon Fraser woman was to me. I thought, 'Oh, snaps, I better get going. I can't lose for the team.' So that's what I did."

Mitchell's time was a personal best, beating her previous one of 56.67 set on April 18 in Azusa, Calif. It was just one highlight of a busy day for her, as she was third in the 200, ran the second leg on the second-place 4x100 team, then led off the victorious 4x400.

Wochnick was just as busy with four events. She took third in the 400, her time of 57.61 giving her a PR for the second day in a row. Wochnick also finished fifth in the 200.
