SEATTLE – This indoor track thing is still rather new to Jahzelle Ambus.

One wouldn't know it from the way she ran this weekend.

Ambus put herself on the cusp of making NCAA provisional qualifying standards in two events and of rewriting the Seattle Pacific indoor track and field record book in those same events with a pair of solid performances at the UW Invitational.

The junior transfer from Lane Community College in Eugene, Ore., easily won her heat of the 400 meters on Saturday afternoon at Dempsey Indoor on the University of Washington campus. Her time of 57.12 seconds was a scant one-hundredth  of a second away from the 57.11 NCAA Division II provisional standard. It also was barely a tenth of a second short of the 57.00 school record.

"It's the first time I've run (the 400) indoor, so I didn't have an idea of what I wanted to do," said Ambus (Portland, Ore.). "But I'll take the 57.1 for sure.

Ambus' time placed her ninth overall among the 42 competitors in the event and was her second top-10 finish of the weekend. On Friday, she was 10th in the 200 meters with a time of 25.17 (winning her prelim heat by nearly a full second). That was just .11 away from NCAA provisional and .18 short of the 24.99 school records set in 1996 by Shavonne Colebrook.

It also was a full two-tenths better than the 25.37 she logged two weeks ago at the UW Indoor Preview on the same Dempsey oval.

"I didn't get out as strong as I'd like to in the 200," Ambus said. "But overall, I felt like I had a lot in me. Coming off the curve, it felt nice, and I got to finish pretty well."

Newness aside, the wintertime indoor version of the sport already might be growing on Ambus.

"I like it a lot – it's different. It's fun," she said. "The curves are tighter, so that's a different feel that you have to get used to. I'd like to get in the low 24s in the 200 and maybe 56 in the 400."

NEW OUTLOOK FOR DECKER
Falcons junior Lynelle Decker says her primary focus for indoor will be the 800 – and that already has paid off in a big way. Decker (Vancouver, Wash. / Mountain View HS) posted a 2:12.83 at the Indoor Preview on Jan. 17, which put her onto the NCAA provisional qualifying list, it has her ranked No. 4 in D2.

But on Saturday, Decker showed she still can get the job done in the mile, as well. She didn't merely run it, she raced it, pushing into the lead on the last of the five-plus laps and hanging on for second place with a time of 5:00.97. That was barely off both her PR of 5:00.78, and the NCAA provisional qual time of 5:00.30.

"I wasn't really expecting much because I'm not really training for the mile right now," Decker said. "But I wanted to do well, obviously. I just went at the race like it was the only race I was running. … I just kind of went for it."

That wasn't her only race, as she later did the 800, finishing in 2:15.17. She acknowledged being "disappointed" by that time, but seemed ready to move on and get focused on the meets still to come.

"I'm definitely emotionally, mentally, and physically better than the fall," Decker said. "For some reason, it was a real intense season in cross country, and I wasn't doing well race-wise. That was really tearing me down mentally.

"But a page turned, I went for indoor, and I was like, 'Hey, I'm going to grab those races and claim them as mine," she added. "And that has really helped."
