BURNABY, B.C. – Mitch Penner and Matt Borton both registered double-doubles for Seattle Pacific, which held Simon Fraser 43 under its national-leading 124-point scoring average in a 115-81 Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball victory on Thursday at West Gym.

Entering the contest the SPU defense was surrendering just 62.3 points, half of what prolific Simon Fraser was producing. That defense limited the Clan to a season-low total and kept them under the 100-point plateau for only the third time this season.

The first-place Falcons (12-3) extended their winning streak to six games and improved to 4-1 in league play. They have not lost in 13 all-time meetings with Simon Fraser.

Penner pitched in a career-high 31 points and 11 rebounds, while also distributing seven assists. The 6-foot-5 forward from Seattle's Kennedy High School surpassed his previous best total of 26 points. He shot 11-of-15 from the field and made 2 of 3 treys.

Borton (Yakima, Wash./West Valley HS) compiled 16 of his 21 points during the first half. He grabbed a career-best 15 rebounds to spark SPU's 53-17 domination of the glass.

SPU senior center Cory Hutsen (Sammamish, Wash./Skyline HS) chipped in 20 points, his seventh time reaching that figure this season.

Sango Niango scored 27 points to lead Simon Fraser (6-6), which dropped to 1-3 in GNAC games. Patrick  Simon added 14 points for the Clan.

After jumping out to an 11-4 lead, SPU saw the hosts net the next seven points to tie the score. The Clan later took their only lead of the game, at 18-17, on a layup by Justin Cole with 9:29 left in the first half.

The Falcons led by one before Borton tallied 10 points during a three-minute span to fuel a 16-7 run that produced a 43-33 advantage with 3:00 left in the half.

They maintained that 10-point differential to go into intermission up 52-42.

SPU clinically broke the constant full-court press for easy baskets during the second half. Layups and free throws accounted for 52 of the visitor's 63 points during a second half in which they shot 65 percent (26 of 40).

The Clan drew within 63-55 on a 3-pointer by Cole with 15:07 left to play. SPU responded with the next 10 points, all of them on back-door layups, to take control of the game.

The Falcons finished at 61 percent shooting (44 of 72) for the game, including 8-for-15 accuracy on 3-pointers.

Simon Fraser averaged 16 treys entering the game, but hit only 5 on 21 attempts.

The SPU men remain on the road to meet Western Washington on Saturday night. Tip-off for that clash in Bellingham was recently changed to 9 p.m. to accommodate a live television broadcast on ROOT Sports.
