The Seattle Pacific Falcons were ahead late in the first two games, but saw Western Oregon come from behind in both, and the Wolves went on to sweep Thursday night's Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match.
Scores in the New P.E. Building were 25-23, 27-25, 25-16.
Freshman setter
Symone Tran recorded her second straight double-double and eighth of the season for the Falcons (6-13, 4-7 GNAC). Tran (Portland, Ore.) had 39 assists and 11 digs.
Lexi BiondiSophomore outside hitter
Lexi Biondi (Albuquerque, N.M.) led SPU with 13 kills. She now has double-digit kills in nine of her last 11 matches. Sophomore opposite
Hannah Lautenbach (Portland, Ore.) added nine kills to go along with 13 digs. Lautenbach moved past 300 kills for her career, now totaling 306.
Senior libero
Breanne Wiekamp (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) led with 23 digs. That was her eighth match of the season with 20-plus. Freshman middle blocker
Shaun Crespi (Camarillo, Calif.) had five kills, including her career 100th.
The Falcons visit Concordia on Saturday night at 7:00 in Portland. They swept the Cavaliers in Brougham Pavilion last month.
SPU had an 18-15 lead in Set 1 when Western Oregon (6-14, 3-8 GNAC) went on an 8-1 run to go up 23-19. The Wolves made it 24-20, then saw the Falcons get within 24-23 on a kill by senior outside hitter
Ellie Britt (Orange, Calif.) and back-to-back kills by Biondi. WOU got the final point on a service error.
Seattle Pacific racked up four straight points to from 19-18 down to 22-19 ahead in Set 2, and eventually had double set point at 24-22. Western Oregon tallied three in a row for a 25-24 lead. The Falcons tied it at 25-25 before the Wolves scored the next two.
"We started out really well in the first set. We were hitting well, and we were up," SPU coach
Chris Johnson said. "They went on that 8-1 run, and that changed the match right there. They took control. We gave up a big run when we were up 22-19 (in Set 2), and you just can't do that."
Tied at 2-2 in the third, Western Oregon put three in a row on the board and never trailed again.
"We continued to make those same errors we were making in the first two sets," Johnson said. "By the time we got to the third set, they smelled blood, and we didn't execute."
Luisa McInnisSPU hit .121 for the night, putting down 43 kills. Senior middle blocker
Luisa McInnis (Santa Rosa, Calif.) played an error-free match with seven kills on 15 attacks for a .467 hitting percentage. That was her Falcon single-match best for kills, exceeding her old mark of six set just last Thursday against Central Washington.
"Luisa was awesome tonight," Johnson said. "We're hoping for more and more performances like that from our middles, so it was good to see her do that."
The Wolves also had 43 kills, and hit slightly higher at .140. They also got eight points on blocks. The Falcons had three points on blocks.
