Symone Tran put her third straight double-double into the book, but Concordia went on lengthy scoring runs in each of the three games on Saturday night to sweep Seattle Pacific in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match.
Scores in Cavalier Gymnasium were 25-19, 25-18, 25-18. The outcome reversed last month's SPU sweep in Seattle.
Freshman setter Tran (Portland, Ore.) had 28 assists and 11 digs for the Falcons (6-14, 4-8 GNAC). She now has nine double-doubles for the season.
Sophomore outside hitter
Lexi Biondi (Albuquerque, N.M.) led SPU with 10 kills, and senior outside
Ellie Britt (Orange, Calif.) added eight. Senior libero
Breanne Wiekamp (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) came up with 15 digs, and freshman serving / defensive specialist
Amanda Ganete (Hillsboro, Ore.) had 10.
Freshman middle blocker
Shaun Crespi (Camarillo, Calif.) had six kills and hit a team-leading .294 for SPU. Sophomore opposite / middle blocker
Hannah Lautenbach (Portland, Ore.) had five block assists.
The Falcons hit just .054 for the match (30 kills-23 errors-130 attacks), and had eight serving errors. Concordia, led by the nine kills and 15 digs of Lindsey Dorsey, hit .190.
"I just told them in the locker room that we're shooting ourselves in the foot," coach
Chris Johnson said. "If you look at the points, they scored 49 and we scored 40, so it's not like we're that far off as far as earning points. But then we give them all these unforced errors, and that has killed us. We just need to make better choices with everything.
"Shaun was great tonight, and Ellie had a good night – she minimized her errors pretty well," Johnson added. (Britt had just three on 33 attacks, staying within the goal of no more than10 percent errors.)
Concordia (15-5, 7-5 GNAC) won its fifth match in a row.
With Game1 tied at 7-7, the Cavaliers took command with seven points in row. They were in front for most of Game 2, but effectively sealed it with four straight points to extend a 19-15 lead to 23-15.
Down 5-1 in the third game, Seattle Pacific stormed back to go up, 15-13. Concordia called a timeout, then ran off seven straight points for a 20-15 lead.
SPU begins a three-match homestand on Thursday when Alaska Fairbanks comes to Brougham Pavilion at 7:00 p.m.
