Symone Tran racked up another double-double, and
Hannah Lautenbach put down 12 kills, but Seattle Pacific, despite winning Game 1 and hanging close through the middle two games, dropped a four-game decision to Northwest Nazarene in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match.
Scores in the Johnson Sports Center on Thursday night were 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-13.
Symone TranFreshman setter Tran (Portland, Ore.) had 32 assists and a career-high 17 digs for her 11th double-double of the season. Her dig total was two more than her previous best of 15, set on Sept. 17 in a five-gamer at Simon Fraser, and also moved her past 200 for her career. She now has 206.
"They were really attacking Symone, and she was digging everything, and that was great," Falcons head coach
Chris Johnson said.
Hannah
LautenbachSophomore opposite Lautenbach (Portland, Ore.) registered her 10th double-digit kill total of the year and her first since Oct. 29 when she had 11 against Alaska Fairbanks. She came within one dig of a double-double, had five total blocks, including a solo, and posted SPU's top hitting percentage of .146.
Senior libero
Breanne Wiekamp (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) came up with 22 digs. It was her 10th match of the year with 20 or more.
Seattle Pacific (7-18, 5-12 GNAC) concludes the road portion of its schedule on Saturday at Central Washington, with the first serve at 7:00 p.m.
Last month in Brougham Pavilion, SPU and defending conference champion Northwest Nazarene battled through a five-setter, with NNU finally prevailing 15-10 in the fifth.
On Thursday, the Falcons staged a comeback to pull out Game 1. Down 22-20, they tied it at 22, then saw the Crusaders (16-9, 13-4 GNAC) go back on top, 23-22.
A kill by senior outside hitter
Ellie Britt (Orange, Calif.) tied it at 23-23. SPU went ahead 24-23 on a bad set by Northwest Nazarene, then got the clinching point on a Crusaders attack error.
Seattle Pacific had a 19-18 lead in the second game before NNU scored seven of the final nine points to pull the match even.
Another late rally gave the third game to the Crusaders, as they put seven of the final eight points on the board after the Falcons had forced a 20-18 edge.
Northwest Nazarene took care of the final game with a 9-1 surge that turned a 5-5 tie into a 14-6 lead.
"We were playing really good defense in both of those first two games, and that's what kept it close," Johnson said. "We won the first game even though we got out-hit and only had eight kills. But they had some ball handling errors and some service errors, and we got some blocks, and it worked out in our favor."
Although the Falcons struggled on offense, finishing at just .026 hitting (38 kills-34 errors-156 attacks), they had a strong defensive effort. SPU limited the Northwest nazarene to just .168 hitting, but the Crusaders wound up with 20 more kills (58-30-167).
Seattle Pacific picked up 11 points on blocks. Besides Lautenbach's total of five, freshman middle blocker
Shaun Crespi (Camarillo, Calif.) had six, all on block assists.
"Overall, I was proud of the way we played, especially defensively – 11 blocks is a good number," Johnson said. "(NNU) came in hitting .222. We did a really good job of holding them down. They're a good team and getting better. In the end, their offense won it for them."
Kendra Bodine led Northwest Nazarene with 19 kills, and Madi Farrell had 11 kills and 10 total blocks.
