SEATTLE – She's back.

And if her latest performances are any indication, Maliea Luquin is better than ever.

The Seattle Pacific junior set personal bests in the long jump and high jump, and recorded a season best in the 60-meter hurdles on Sunday morning at the UW Indoor Open track and field meet.

5997The competition at Dempsey Indoor on the University of Washington campus was the last one before next weekend's Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships, set for Friday and Saturday in Nampa, Idaho.

SPU junior Luquin (Portland, Ore.) will compete in the pentathlon on Friday in the Jackson's Track facility at the Idaho Center. That one-day, five-event test will be her first indoor multi-event competition since 2012, when she was a freshman.

"I'm really, really jazzed about that and just getting some big numbers," Luquin said. "I would look at my freshman year score (2,784 points) and go, 'Oooh, that's terrible.' So my main thing is putting as many numbers up there as I can."

If Luquin even merely matches on Friday in Nampa what she did on Sunday in Seattle, she'll be well on her way to beating that score.

She started her morning in the 60 hurdles, clocking a 9.07. That was .01 better than her previous 2015 best, and just one-tenth shy of her lifetime best.

From there, it was a quick trot to the high jump, where her clearance of 4-10 ¼ was a PR by 5 ¼ inches. Then, it was over to the long jump, where her first try of the day also turned out to be her best at 17-5 ½ -- a full foot and three inches farther than she'd ever gone indoors, and even 1 ¼ inches more than her outdoor best.

"I worked at a school and I taught my little kids how to long jump and high jump on the high school equipment," Luquin said in explaining one of the ways she kept in shape during her year away. "That was real good."

Those three marks alone would add up to 2,142 pentathlon points, with the shot put and 800 meters still to be factored into it.

"I normally would say I'm nervous with the 800. But endurance-wise, I've just felt really strong lately," she said. "I'm really excited about the 8 – that sounds really weird coming out of my mouth, because that's not normally the case."

FINISHING SOME UNFINISHED BUSINESS
The year-long break wasn't initially what Luquin had in mind.

When she arrived at Seattle Pacific in the fall of 2011, she already was two years ahead academically, thanks to the popular Running Start program that gives students a chance to finish their high school diploma and earn up to two years of college credit.

So by the end of spring 2013, during which she really came into her own by posting an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 100-meter hurdles and setting PRs in four of the seven events while placing sixth in the GNAC outdoor heptathlon, Luquin was done with her creative writing degree.

Grad school was next.

But those plans didn't work out right away at Seattle Pacific, so Luquin went home to Portland. A year later, they did work out, and she's now pursuing her master's degree with an emphasis on poetry.

"It's going really well so far," she said. "It's pretty straight-forward, and I'll be done when I finish track."

To Luquin, finishing track ranks right up there with finishing her master's.

"I knew when I left that I needed to get back here and keep running, that I wasn't done – and I wasn't," she said.

"Every moment feels more precious."
