GRESHAM, Ore. – Her first college outdoor track meet was new enough to Jessica Rawlins.
 
Her first college outdoor event was even newer. But what a debut it was.
 
Rawlins, back in action just one week after running at the NCAA indoor nationals, accepted the challenge of the steeplechase on Saturday at the inaugural Rose City Preview, and came out of it with the upper hand. She won the 2,000-meter event in 7 minutes, 11.72 seconds, a six-second advantage on runner-up Michelle Fletcher of Northwest Christian.
 
"It was really different – I've never done anything like that before," said SPU freshman Rawlins (Mill Creek, Wash. / Henry M. Jackson HS). "I didn't know what to expect, really."





Saturday's race at Earl Klapstein Stadium on the Mount Hood Community College campus was 1,000 meters shorter than the standard NCAA 3,000-meter distance. But that was fine with Rawlins, as she starts to learn an event that was never part of her high school career.
 
"I was glad it was just 2K. It was hard," Rawlins said. "I just tried by the end to get over the hurdles, stay upright, and keep clicking off my pace."
 
The shorter distance also meant just five jumps into the water pit instead of seven.
 
"It was scary – I didn't want to fall into it or make any other rookie mistakes with it," Rawlins said, laughing.
 
The steeple was not originally on Rawlins' radar until she sat down with Falcons assistant coach Audra Smith in January.
 
"She had me maybe penciled in as trying out the steeple, and was asking me how I thought about that," said Rawlins, who was among SPU's top three in cross country last fall and led off the distance medley relay that placed ninth at indoor nationals last week.. "I was intrigued by it and was open to it. We've been doing some some stuff the last couple weeks to prepare. We decided to try it out here and see if I would want to continue doing that outdoors."
 
And …does she want to continue?
 
"Yeah … I think so," Rawlins said with a smile.
 
TWO MORE VICTORIES, AND NO. 2 TIMES FIVE
While Rawlins started the daywith a win, the Falcons finished it with two more, and had five second-place finishes in between.

 

Freshman Naphtali Ward, who just last month captured the Great Northwest Athletic Conference indoor high jump title, was victorious in her college outdoor debut. Ward went over at 5 feet, 5 inches. That was GNAC automatic and an inch away from NCAA provisional.
 
The 4x400 relay took the top spot in 3:53.37, with junior Jahzelle Ambus, freshman Becca Houk, junior Jalen Tims, and senior Jasmine Johnson. Ambus had the Falcons in front after the first leg, then Portland State surged into the lead on Leg 2. Tims brought SPU back into the lead toward the end of the third leg, then handed off to Johnson, who stretched it out on the anchor.

 

Ambus (Portland, Ore.), clocked 56.06 seconds for runner-up in the 400 meters. Not only was that fast enough for an automatic berth in the GNAC meet in May, it was just eight-hundredths of a second shy of making the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying list. During the winter, Ambus ran a school indoor record 56.18 to win the conference crown.
 
Lynelle Decker (Vancouver, Wash. / Mountain View HS), like Rawlins just one week removed from running at NCAA indoors, was took second in the 1,500 at 4:35.95. The junior did two races – the individual 800 and the 800 leg on the ninth-place distance medley relay – last Friday in Birmingham, Ala.

 

Sophomore Michaella Kahns and freshman Michelle Louie tied for second in the pole vault, both getting over at 10-11 ¾. Kahns (Burlington, Wash. / Burlington –Edison HS) went 10-6 in the season-opening UPS Outdoor Preview on March 7, and Louie (Bellevue, Wash. / Bellevue HS) went nearly a foot higher than the 10-0 bar she cleared at UPS in her first college outdoor meet.
 
Houk, Ambus, sophomore Kyra Brannan, and senior Tasia Baldwin were second in the 4x100 relay in 47.26 seconds. The time to meet or beat for NCAA provisional is 46.91.
 
Junior Luisa McInnis (Santa Rosa, Calif.) tied for second in the high jump at 5-1.
 
Houk (Oregon City, Ore.) logged a GNAC automatic mark, clocking 12.37 for fourth place in the 100-meter dash.
 
Seattle Pacific returns to action next Saturday in the Club Northwest Spring Break Open at West Seattle Stadium. The first event is at 9 a.m. This will be the only meet in the city for the Falcons this spring.
