LAKEWOOD, Wash. – Seattle Pacific rowers were prepared for four races Saturday. They didn't even finish one.

The Falcons made it nearly three-quarters of the way through the 2,000-meter women's varsity four race before taking on too much water to continue. High winds created huge waves on the American Lake course and forced cancelation of the Daffodil Sprints regatta soon after that.

"It was like the Poseidon Adventure all over again," exclaimed coach Keith Jefferson, who is in his 25th year directing the SPU rowing program.

"It wasn't unexpected. Any time the wind blows out of the south on this course, you get rough conditions on the north side, which is down by the start. It was pleasant when we got there and then the wind picked up, but it started dying down before we launched.

"Our women made it until about 1,250 (meters) into the race before they were getting relatively overwhelmed. And then it was about the 1,500 when they went gunnels under. It was a show-stopper!"

The previous six races were completed without incident. But the race following SPU's mishap, the women's novice four competition, saw host Puget Sound's entry face a fate similar to the Falcons.

"Puget Sound also swamped or swamped and flipped," Jefferson described.

The remaining 13 races were canceled, including the men's varsity four competition that was up next. The Falcons men were already at the start for that event before hearing the 10:30 a.m. announcement that racing had ceased.

The Falcons four-oared crews were scheduled to race in men's and women's finals early in the afternoon, but those events were also canceled.

The SPU rowers hope to get full races in on Saturday, April 4. They remain in Seattle to compete in the Husky Open on the Montlake Cut.
