FAQ
Who succeeds as a walk-on? Athletes with strong fitness backgrounds (from sports like swimming, track, basketball, volleyball, soccer, etc.) who are committed, coachable, and eager to learn.
When do tryouts take place? Tryouts are usually held within the first three weeks of the fall academic quarter and typically run for two weeks.
What events do we race? The main season in the spring consists of 2,000 meter races in boats with 8 rowers and 1 coxswain or a boat with 4 rowers and 1 coxswain. These races are multiple lanes across where you are trying to get your boat ahead of everyone else.
Would I miss a lot of school for travel? Regattas take place on weekends so you’ll only miss a couple Thursdays and Fridays in the spring.
Is there a cost? There’s no cost to try out or participate. If you make the team, you’ll need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center ($100 one-time fee). A waiver for this fee may also be available.
How do I prepare? If you are planning to participate in tryouts, please complete pre-participation medical forms above.
Stay active, stay engaged! Cardiovascular activities, strength training and maintaining a positive mindset are key.
Keep a positive mindset and be ready to try something new!
