TACOMA – The Seattle Pacific Falcons cleared the first-meet-of-the-season hurdle on Saturday – in more ways than one.

Maliea Luquin won the 400-meter hurdles in an automatic qualifying time for the conference meet, and Cheryl Hong won the 100-meter hurdles in the UPS Outdoor Preview track and field meet at Baker Stadium.

The Falcons also got winning performances from Sammi Markham in the shot put and from its 4x400 relay to finish third among the five women's teams competing in the outdoor season opener. SPU finished with 86 ½ points. Whitworth won handily with 190, and Western Washington was second with 120.

Luquin (Portland, Ore.), a junior clocked 1 minute, 4.62 seconds in the long hurdles race. That was less than a second shy of her personal-best time of 1:03.98 set at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships in 2013. She did not compete last year. Saturday's time guaranteed her a spot in that race at this year's GNACs.

SPU sophomore Hong (Federal Way, Wash. / Jefferson HS) took the shorter hurdles race in 16.84 seconds.

Luquin also led off Seattle Pacific's victorious 4x400. Freshman Chynna Phan, and sophomores Maddi Hommes and Ali Sowers carried the baton after her, and the Falcons were across the finish line in 4:03.15.

Sophomore Markham (Gig Harbor, Wash. / Gig Harbor HS) had the best mark of the day in the shot put at 39 feet, 8 inches. That was a PR by nearly 11 inches, easily beating her old mark of 38-9 ¾ and put her onto the GNAC provisional qualifying list.

All three of Seattle Pacific's pole vaulters made GNAC provisional. Sophomore Michaella Kahns (Burlington, Wash. / Burlington-Edison HS) tied for third at 10-6. Junior Madi Webster (Coloardo Springs, Colo.) and freshman Michelle Louie (Bellevue, Wash. / Bellevue HS) both got over at 10 feet.

Junior Michaela Farner (Molalla, Ore.) made the conference provisional list with a javelin throw of 129 feet, 10 inches.

LOPEZ EARNS MEN'S PROVISIONAL TIME
Falcons freshman Mario Lopez made his college outdoor debut in speedy fashion, posting a GNAC provisional qualifying time in the 200-meter dash. Lopez (Chino, Calif.) came across the line in 22.51 seconds, good for third place.

Lopez also led off SPU's second-place 4x400 relay, teaming with freshman Chris Moreton (Everett, Wash. / Kamiak HS), Justin Ramsey (Colorado Springs, Colo.), and Adam Avischious (Colorado Springs, Colo.) for a time of 3:27.66. That already is faster than any Falcons team ran in 2014, when the best time was 3:28.16.

SPU was fourth among the five men's teams with 57 points. Whitworth won with 232, and host University of Puget Sound was a distant second with 99.

SPU will not have an outdoor competition next week as focus shifts to the NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala. Junior Lynelle Decker will run the 800 meters, and will join freshmen Jessica Rawlins and Becca Houk, and fellow junior Anna Patti on the 4,000-meter distance medley relay.

Outdoor action resumes on Saturday, March 21, at the Rose City Preview in Greshman, Ore.
