AZUSA, Calif. – Lynelle Decker needed nearly the whole first lap to get in front of the race.

Now, she's in front of most of the country.

The Seattle Pacific left everything and everyone behind on Friday – all of the competition, her personal-best time, and an entire full second on the stopwatch – as she ran the second-fastest 800 meters in NCAA Division II this spring,  winning in 2 minutes, 8.13 seconds at the Bryan Clay Invitational track and field meet.

The time for Decker (Vancouver, Wash. / Mountain View HS) at Cougar Athletic Stadium on the Azusa Pacific University campus leaves only Simon Fraser senior Lindsey Butterworth ahead of her. Butterworth, who is not in this meet, went 2:05.86 on April 3 at the Stanford Invitational.

"I was so excited, and I'm still pretty flabbergasted," said Decker, who came back a few hours later and ran a national top-10 time of 4:30.08 in the 1,500. "It hit me, but it hasn't hit me. I thought I was going to be at 2:09 or something – that's what I was aiming for.

"I was so pumped that it was so close to a 2:07."

Indeed, Decker didn't even bother with the 2:09s. Her previous best time was 2:10.58 at the Stanford Invitational on April 5, 2014. She nearly matched that two weeks ago at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, coming across the line in 2:10.64.

"Yeah, I think it surprised her to be in the 2:08s," SPU assistant coach Audra Smith said. "She was super-aggressive, and she executed correctly."

What's more, Decker did it without anyone pushing her at the end. She won her heat by more than two seconds ahead of Hanna Hermansson of Marymount (Calif.), who clocked 2:10.29. The overall second-place finisher was Taryn Rawlings from the University of Portland. She won the heat right after Decker's in 2:09.46.

"I felt really comfortable the whole race until the last 100 meters," said Decker, whose time was the sixth-fastest in Seattle Pacific history and the eighth-best in GNAC history. "Then I could tell my form was breaking down. It felt good to attack the race – that's what I've been training for."

Although it was just shy of the NCAA automatic qualifying standard of 2:08.00, there's no question that Decker will be heading to Grand Rapids, Mich., next month for the nationals. That will mark the eighth time in her nine competitive seasons as a Falcon – two out of three autumns for cross country, all three winters for indoor track, and now all three springs for outdoor track – that Decker will race at the NCAAs.

Decker's 4:30.08 was good for 20th among the 167 runners in the 1,500, and was just 34 hundredths off her career best. As of Friday evening, it ranked No. 8, although times from other meets – including the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays, taking place 16 miles down the road in Walnut – had not yet been posted.

She plans to run the 800 (but not the 1,500) again on Saturday at the Beach Invitational in nearby Norwalk.

FIRST NATIONAL TIME FOR MACDONALD

Sarah Macdonald
SPU sophomore Sarah Macdonald continues to make her mark this spring. Macdonald (Tucson, Ariz.) made an NCAA standard for the first time in her college career on Friday, finishing the 5,000 meters in 17 minutes, 17.68 seconds.

That beat the provisional time of 17:21.38, and was a PR by nearly three seconds. Macdonald ran 17:25.16 at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on April 3. Last year, her best time was 17:33.17.

HOUK BREAKS 200 BARRIER
Falcons freshman Becca Houk had it in mind to break the 25-second mark in the 200-meter dash this weekend, and came through on Friday. Houk (Oregon City, Ore.) was 19th overall in 24.99 seconds.

Becca Houk
That continued a steady drop over the past three meets. After clocking 25.46 in her college outdoor debut on March 21 at the Rose City Preview, she had a slightly slower 25.96 a week later at the Club Northwest Spring Break Open. Houk came back with a 25.33 at the JD Shotwell Invitational on April 4, then 25.05 at last week's Emilie Mondor Invite in Burnaby, B.C.

Her all-time fastest mark is 24.74, with which she won the Class 6A (large school) state title last spring for Oregon City.

She also logged a college PR in the 100 on Friday at 12.14.

Kyra Brannan
LOOK AT BRANNAN FLY
Until Friday, SPU hadn't had an 18-foot women's long jump this season. Sophomore Kyra Brannan took care of that, with several inches to spare.

Brannan (Kennewick, Wash. / Kamiakin HS) went 18 feet, 7 inches, to place 10th among the 63 competitors. That beat her old personal best of 18-4 ½, which she set twice last spring as a freshman. And, it was nearly a foot farther than her previous 2015 season best of 17-8 ¾ on March 21.

Peyton Harris
SPEAKING OF FLYING …
Freshman Peyton Harris certainly is getting back into his long jump groove. Harris (Boise, Idaho), who won the Class 5A state title last spring, went 22-9 for 20th place among 56 competitors on Friday. That was 1 foot, 3 inches farther than his previous college PR, set just last Saturday in Canada.

It also brought Harris considerably closer to his Idaho state championship distance of 23-5 ¼.

AND THERE'S MORE
--Whether it was for the season or for their careers, were racking up speedy time on Friday. In addition to Houk's times in the 100 and 200, posting career bests were senior Jasmine Johnson in the women's 200 at 25.48 (previous 25.75), freshmen Mario Lopez (22.35, previous 22.51) and Clifford Paulk (22.58, previous 22.79) in the men's 200, and freshman Chris Moreton with his first outdoor sub-50 in the men's 400 (49.92, previous 50.27; Moreton ran a 49.94 indoors this winter).
-- In the season-best category were senior David Ferguson in the men's 100 (11.11, previous 11.47) and 200 (22.27, previous 22.55), senior Tasia Baldwin in the women's 100 (12.39, previous 12.73) and 200 (25.17, previous 25.70), and sophomore Kyra Brannan in the women's 100 (12.41, previous 12.99).
-- Lopez (49.42 in the men's 400) and junior Jahzelle Ambus (56.06 in the women's 400) tied their career bests.
