NORWALK, Calif. – The door cracked open on Friday. Jahzelle Ambus burst through it on Saturday.

Ambus became the second Seattle Pacific woman in two days to break the 25-second mark in the 200-meter dash, tying the sixth-fastest time in school history with a 24.90 at the Beach Invitational track and field meet.

The Falcons junior from Portland matched the time posted by Myisha Valentine in 2012. It also beat her career best of 25.03, which she set in winning the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges 200 title last spring for Lane CC of Eugene.

On Friday, freshman Becca Houk clocked 24.99 at the Bryan Clay Invitational in nearby Azusa.

The PR for Ambus on Saturday was one of nine for Seattle Pacific in the meet at Cerritos College.

Maliea Luquin
Junior Maliea Luquin, who came close to her best-ever time in the 400-meter hurdles at last Saturday's Emilie Mondor Invitational in Burnaby, B.C., beat it with room to spare, coming across the finish line in 1:03.45. Her old mark was 1:03.98, which she missed by a scant five-hundredths of a second a week ago in Canada.

Luquin (Portland, Ore.) also had a season-best time of 14.68 in the 100 hurdles, an automatic qualifier for next month's Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships.

Sophomore Kyra Brannan beat her best time in the 200 meters with a 25.54. Brannan (Kennewick, Wash. / Kamiakin HS) went 25.69 as a freshman in March of 2014.

5975
Michaella Kahns
Sophomore Michaella Kahns got over an 11-foot bar in the pole vault for the first time. Kahns (Burlington, Wash. / Burlington-Edison HS) cleared 11-0 ¾ , an inch higher than she went on March 21 at the Rose City Preview.

Luisa McInnis went 5-3 in the high jump, surpassing her previous mark of 5-2 ¼ from the JD Shotwell Invitational on April 4.

David Ferguson
David Ferguson ran his fastest 100-meter dash as a Falcon. The senior hit the wire in 11.03 seconds, beating his old time of 11.08 set in 2013.

A trio of SPU freshman men accounted for the other three PRs.

Peyton Harris got one of those, going 15.67 in the 110-meter hurdles. Not only was it more than half a second better than his previous best (16.22), it was some nice redemption for Harris (Boise, Idaho), who went down in the 110s on Friday at the Clay Invite after clipping a hurdle late in the race. The time made Harris a provisional qualifier for GNAC.

Mario Lopez
Mario Lopez continued a steady downward trend with his 400 meter time. His 49.19 on Saturday beat his old PR of 49.42, which he had run for two weeks in a row, and moved him up from GNAC provisional qualifying to automatic. Lopez (Chino, Calif.) also beat his indoor PR of 49.27 from the conference meet in February.

Clifford Paulk ran his best time in the 100-meter dash with an 11.10. That was more than a full tenth better than his 11.22 in the JD Shotwell Invitational on April 4 and put Paulk (Marysville, Wash. / Marysville Pilchuck HS) onto the GNAC provisional qualifying list.

SPU will be in two meets next Saturday. One group will head to San Diego for the Triton Invitational. Another will make a short trip to Bellingham for the Ralph Vernacchia Invitational at Civic Stadium.
