PROVO, Utah – Freshman forward
Tony Miller came off the bench and produced 28 points for Seattle Pacific in its exhibition game against Brigham Young, but the Cougars went on to top the Falcons on Saturday night at the Marriott Center, 102-82.
BYU was led by a strong performance by sophomore forward Eric Mika, who contributed 23 points and added a game-high 12 rebounds.
Miller also nabbed a team-high nine rebounds for SPU. Senior center
Joe Rasmussen, sophomore forward
Coleman Wooten and junior forward
Sam Simpson all scored in double digits for the Falcons with 16, 14 and 12 points respectively.
"
Tony Miller came off the bench and was really good for us," head coach
Grant Leep said. "He has shown flashes of that in practice.
Coleman Wooten is a guy for us as a sophomore and we need him to be able to score for us this year.
Our bigs are such good shooters," Leep added, "so Rassmussen [and] Simpson [had] some looks that help our offense so much."
SPU used an 8-0 run within first two minutes to take an early 10-4 lead. But BYU answered with a 10-0 run of its own to retake the advantage at 14-10 in the sixth minute of the game after back-to-back jump shots from sophomore guard Nick Emery.
The Cougars built a 10-point lead at 24-14 with 12:32 remaining the first half, and led by six or more points for the rest of the game. They took a 55-46 lead in to halftime and continued their offensive attack into the second half thanks to Mika and Emery.
With 3:50 remaining in the game, SPU was within striking distance at 91-80. But BYU closed it out with an 11-2 run. Missed free throws came back to hurt the Falcons as they made just 62.5 percent (25 of 40) of their shots from the charity stripe.
"We would come down the other end and get fouled and then we would miss free throws," Leep said. "We just got 40 free throw attempts and I just told the guys if someone would have told me in August that we were going to come in here and get 40 free throw attempts, I would have signed up for that in a second.
"Being able to execute defensively and then knock down our free throws provides a different game in that stretch."
Alongside Mika's 23 points for the Cougars, Emery contributed 21 points and six rebounds. Freshman guard TJ Haws put up a double-double 19 points and 10 assists.
Overall, SPU shot just 35.7 percent from the floor (25 of 70) and 22.6 percentfrom beyond the 3-point arc (7 for 31) while Brigham Young hit 57.8 percent of their shots (37-64) and 50 percent of its 3-pointers (6 for12). The Falcons were out-rebounded, 52-36.
"Being able to play in an atmosphere like this is something that is really special for our program and we want to take advantage of it," Leep said. "We came out and played really hard and we are proud of that. It stings as a competitor to lose. But at the same time, [with] the way we competed, we can take some pride in that and hang our hats on that identity."
The Falcons play their final exhibition game next Saturday when they host Lewis and Clark College at 4:30 p.m. in Brougham Pavilion. That will be followed by a women's exhibition game against George Fox at 7:00 p.m.
