SEATTLE –
Gabby Oddo was hot.
Symone Tran knew it.
Oddo slammed kills on four of the last five points in the match and was one of three Seattle Pacific players with double-doubles on Thursday night as the Falcons ran off the last seven points to beat Montana State Billings in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball contest.
Scores in Brougham Pavilion were 25-16, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19 as SPU (7-9, 3-5 GNAC) won its second straight.
Freshman outside hitter Oddo (Alta Loma, Calif.) finished with 16 kills – including the 200th of her career – and 10 digs, hitting .333 with just three errors on 39 attacks. It was her fourth double-double in the last five matches and her 11th of the season.
Of those 16 kills, six came in Game 4.
"Once you get a couple good swings that go down hard, that just brings up everybody's spirit," said Oddo, who now has 214 kills through the first 16 matches of her college career.
Sophomore setter Tran (Portland, Ore.) had her fifth double-double in a row, putting 48 assists and 13 digs into the book. She has nine for the season and 22 for her career.
"I definitely want to go streak the hot hitters whenever they're doing well. But I think everyone did a good job tonight on hitting," Tran said.
Junior opposite
Hannah Lautenbach (Portland, Ore.) was one of those, with a double-double of 10 kills and 13 digs, her fifth of the fall and ninth as a Falcon. Another was senior outside hitter
Lexi Biondi, with 13 kills.
Sophomore libero
Amanda Ganete (Hillsboro, Ore.) set a career high with 29 digs, one more than her previous best of 28.
Chris Johnson
"It feels good to have a win streak," SPU coach
Chris Johnson said. "It's nice to take that into a weekend off. The girls have three days off now, and we've been looking forward to this for a little while."
Seattle Pacific will return to action next Thursday against Simon Fraser in Brougham at 7:00 p.m.
Falling into a 5-0 hole in Game 4, the Falcons finally forged in front, 16-14. They were down 19-18 when Biondi hammered a kill off a Billings blocker to tie it up and give the serve to junior
Sophie Kuehl.
Freshman middle blocker
Abbey Lautenbach (Portland, Ore.) put a kill off the Yellowjackets block to give SPU a 20-19 edge. Oddo then had three in a row – a sharp angle to the side, a tip, and another one to the side to make it 23-19.
Sophie Kuehl
Kuehl (Vancouver, Wash. / Columbia River HS) delivered a hard serve that was returned wide for an ace to set up match point at 24-19. Oddo put it away with a kill that again went off an MSUB block.
That added up to six kills and an ace for the closing seven points. But in fact, from the time they were behind 14-13, the Falcons earned their final 12 points themselves: nine kills (four by Oddo, two each by Biondi and
Hannah Lautenbach, one by
Abbey Lautenbach), two blocks (one by
Shaun Crespi and
Hannah Lautenbach; the other by Biondi and
Abbey Lautenbach), and Kuehl's ace.
SPU hit in the .200s for the second straight match, finishing at .205 (56 kills-24 errors-156 attacks). The Falcons kept Billings (2-14, 1-6 GNAC) below.100 hitting in three of the four games, and the Jackets wound up at .091 (42-27-164).
"Our defense, I can't say enough about tonight, especially our back row," Johnson said. "A lot of times, our front row is averaging a lot of blocks per game, which is great.
"But a career high (in digs) for Amanda; Sophie had some amazing digs tonight; Hannah and Symone have been really consistent playing defense back there, Gabby had another double-double with digs … We're just really doing a good job of keeping the ball off the floor in the back row."
