BURNABY, B.C. –
Shaun Crespi had 12 kills, six blocks, and a career-best hitting night in the middle for Seattle Pacific, but Simon Fraser had four players in double-digit kills to beat the Falcons in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match.
Scores in West Gym were 25-13, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18.
Sophomore middle blocker Crespi (Camarillo, Calif.) hit .550 for the match, with just one error on 20 attacks. Her previous career hitting high was .500, which she achieved four times, most recently in a five-game against Western Washington on Oct. 15 in Brougham Pavilion. Her six blocks gave her 144 for the season.
Sophomore setter
Symone Tran (Portland, Ore.) logged 34 assists and 11 digs for her third straight double, 16th of the season and 29th of her career. The 34 assists put her past 1,000 for the season. She now has 1,017, and is the first Falcon to top a grand since Shelby Swanson had 1,105 in 2012.
SPU (10-16, 6-12 GNAC) had five players in double-digit digs. Leading the way was sophomore libero
Amanda Ganete with 21. Junior outside hitter
Colleen Hannigan had 16, junior opposite
Hannah Lautenbach had 13, and junior defensive specialist
Sophie Kuehl joined Tran with 11.
"Shaun was unstoppable tonight," Falcons coach
Chris Johnson said. "It seemed like she was killing every ball set her way, and she came up with six blocks. Abbey played very well also, and I thought we did a good job of defending, for the most part. Amanda and Sophie played well again, and Amanda passed really well."
Seattle Pacific had a 5-3 lead in the opening game when Simon Fraser (20-6, 13-5 GNAC) ran off six points in a row for a 9-5 advantage and never trailed again.
The Falcons staged a big comeback to win Game 2. Down 20-11, they put seven straight points on the board, the last six of those with
Hannah Lautenbach serving. She had an ace and Crespi had two kills during that run.
Still down 23-21, SPU got the last four points to win it: back-to-back kills by
Abbey Lautenbach, then two straight Clan attack errors.
Simon Fraser strung together six straight points in the middle of Game 3, expanding a 15-12 lead to 21-12. Except for a 2-2 tie, the Clan led all the way in the fourth game to close out the match.
Tessa May had 16 kills for Simon, which hit .205 for the match (58 kills-23 errors-171 attacks). SPU finished at .099 (42-26-162).
The two teams wound up splitting their two matches. The Falcons won in a sweep on Oct. 13 at home.
Seattle Pacific closes out the season at home next week against No. 11-ranked Alaska Anchorage on Thursday night and Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday. Both contests start at 7:00 p.m. in Brougham Pavilion. The match against the Nanooks will be Senior Night, with
Lexi Biondi and
Maddi Hommes to be honored prior to the first serve.
