SEATTLE – Freshman
Tony Miller led five double-figure scorers with 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Saturday to lead Seattle Pacific to a 96-65 win over Lewis & Clark College in a men's basketball exhibition game.
The Falcons got a victory in the Brougham Pavilion home debut of
Grant Leep as a head coach. He was a seven-year SPU assistant coach before replacing Ryan Looney in May.
SPU evened its exhibition record after losing its opener, 102-82, at Brigham Young on Oct. 29.
Miller (Woodinville HS) came off the bench and drained 8 of 13 shots from the field and led all rebounders with 10 for his first double-double as a Falcon.
Sharif Khan (Bellevue HS) provided a spark off the bench as well, with 15 points and a team-leading four assists. Freshman guard Khan was 5 of 7 from the field and was 3 of 3 from behind the 3-point line. Khan and
Sam Simpson led the team with three steals apiece.
Seattle Pacific shot 51.5 percent from the floor (35 of 68) and 40 percent from behind the 3-point line (10 of 25). It limited the Pioneers to 38.9 percent shooting from the floor (28 of 72) and 21.4 percent from beyond the arc (6 of 28).
The Falcons dominated on the glass as they outrebounded Lewis & Clark 49 to 33. Offense rebounds played a key role for SPU as it ended the night with 20. In addition to Miller's 10 rebounds,
Coleman Wooten pulled down nine.
Three other Falcons also scored in double-digits.
Olivier-Paul Betu,
Joe Rasmussen and
Gavin Long tallied 14, 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Seattle Pacific took the lead for good at 18-17 at the 10:40 mark on two free throws from Miller.
The lead was 20-19 before the Falcons staged a 24-5 run, fueled by eight points from Betu who nailed two treys during the spree. That surge resulted in a 44-24 advantage with 2:47 left in the first half.
The Falcons had a 48-30 lead going into halftime and never led by less than 19 points in the second half.
Markel Leonard paced the Pioneers with 13 points and two assists.
The Falcons will begin their regular season schedule next week with the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic when they host Simon Fraser, Humboldt State and Hawaii-Hilo over a two day stretch. Seattle Pacific clashes with Humboldt State on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. in Brougham Pavilion and will meet Hawaii-Hilo at the same time on Nov. 12.
