HONOLULU – Kiran Shastri nailed a 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds showing on the clock Wednesday, lifting Chaminade to an 87-86 non-conference men's basketball victory over Seattle Pacific at McCabe Gym.
SPU's
Coleman Wooten had converted two free throws with 6.9 seconds remaining to put the visitors up 86-84.
The Silverswords' Austin Pope quickly brought the ball downcourt and found Shastri on the left wing for the decisive trey. That was the second game-winning 3-pointer this season for the 6-foot-7 senior guard.
Wooten scored 19 of his 22 points during the second half to help the Falcons (4-5) rally from a nine-point halftime deficit.
Falcons freshman
Gavin Long also scored 22 points, 18 above his season average of 4.0 points per game. Long made 9 of 10 shots to more than triple his previous career-high total of seven points.
Tony Miller added 16 points for SPU and
Joe Rasmussen had 14.
Rohndell Goodwin registered 23 points to lead Chaminade (5-4) before fouling out with 3:32 left to play. Sam Daley scored seven of his team's final 11 points, finishing with 19 for the game. Pope had 17 points and Tyler Cartaino 11.
Shastri scored nine points, all of them from 3-point range.
SPU shot a season-best 53 percent from the field (30 of 57), slightly better than the 51-percent effort (36 of 71) turned in by Chaminade.
Coleman Wooten
After starting the scoring 29 seconds into the game with a Rasmussen 3-pointer, the Falcons went nearly four minutes without another point. The hosts capitalized, scoring 12 unanswered points.
Will Parker ended SPU's drought on a driving layup with 15:37 left in the opening period and his team trailing 12-5.
The Silverswords lead grew to as many as 13 points in the first half when a layup by Pope with 5:37 left put them ahead 33-20. The Falcons netted the next six points to ignite an 11-3 run. Long tallied seven points during the surge that he capped with a three-point play to bring SPU within 36-31.
Chaminade scored the final four points, including Pope's buzzer-beating put-back off a missed 3-pointer by Shastri, to go into intermission with a 42-33 advantage.
SPU quickly erased that halftime deficit, amassing the first nine points of the second half to even the score, 42-42, with 18:18 left to play.
The Falcons gained their largest lead, at 55-48, after Wooten hit a 3-pointer with 14:41 on the clock. The Silverswords staged a 9-2 run to draw level at 57-57.
Wooten sank two free throws and Miller followed with a trey to put SPU up 76-72 with four minutes to play. The teams traded points over the next 10 possessions before Cartaino made one free throw and then Daly scored on a layup to tie the score, 84-84, with 36 seconds left to play.
The Falcons then let the shot clock run down to two seconds before Wooten was fouled with 6.9 on the game clock, setting up his short-lived, go-ahead free throws.
The SPU men remain in Hawaii for one more game. They travel to the Big Island for a rematch with Hawaii-Hilo. SPU defeated the Vulcans 88-80 on Nov. 12 in Seattle.
