Hannigan, Lautenbach and Tran all had double-doubles, and Crespi set a career-high for total blocks, but Hawaii Hilo finally pulled out a five-game match at the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase.
Scores in the Torodome on the Cal State Dominguez Hills campus were 27-25, 25-22, 18-25, 20-25, 15-12.
"We did a lot of really good things," head coach
Chris Johnson said. "We had a chance at set point in the first set, and couldn't do it. We had a five-point lead in the second set and let them back in. We've got to take better care of the ball in those situations.
"We very conceivably could have swept them," he added. "But that's how it goes. You have to take advantage of the opportunities you have, and we weren't able to do that in the first two sets."
The Falcons (3-4 overall) wound up splitting for the day. Earlier, they swept past host Dominguez Hills, 25-19, 25-19, 25-18.
SPU concludes the tournament at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday against Azusa Pacific. The Falcons swept the Cougars last week at the Concordia Irvine Labor Day Classic.
Junior outside hitter Hannigan (Brentwood, Calif.) recorded her first college double-double, putting career-highs of 16 kills and 15 digs into the book. Her previous bests were 10 kills last Saturday against UC San Diego, and 14 digs last Friday against Concordia Irvine.
In the earlier match against Dominguez Hills, Hannigan set career highs with four service aces and five total blocks, one of them solo. She had four more block assists against Hilo.
"Co started out slow, but she really turned it on in the last three sets," Johnson said. "That's the match of her career. I wish we could have won it for her."
Lautenbach (Portland,Ore.) accounted for 14 kills and 19 digs, the latter just one off her career best. That was her first double-double of the season and the fifth of her career.
Sophomore setter Tran (Portland, Ore.) earned 48 assists and came up with 16 digs. That gives her three double-doubles for the year and 16 for her career.
Shaun Crespi
Sophomore middle blocker Crespi (Camarillo, Calif.) had 11 total blocks, one more than her previous best of 10 set last October against Alaska Fairbanks. Of those 11, two were solos.
SPU finished with a season-best 19 total blocks for the night.
After coming back from two game down to force the deciding Game 5, the Falcons fell into a 10-5 hole. But SPU mounted a, rally, going on a 6-1 run to tie it at 11-11.
The Vulcans (3-4 overall) scored the next two for 13-11, Hannigan responded with her final kill of the night, then Hilo tallied the last two points on a tip to the sideline and then a kill.
The Falcons had leads late in each of the first two games. Down 24-22 in the opener, they ran off three straight to give themselves a game-point opportunity at 25-24. Hawaii Hilo (2-4) then put the last three on the board.
SPU was up 21-16 and then 22-18 in Game 2. But from there, the Vulcans scored the last seven points to take a two-game lead.
An 8-0 run in the third game produced a 20-9 bulge that allowed the Falcons to close out that one. They took charge of Game 4 with a 6-2 burst that turned a 17-17 tie into a 23-19 advantage as they finally leveled it at two games apiece.
Seattle Pacific finished with 19 total blocks and served up six more aces. The Falcons now have in three matches at the tournament.

Hannah Lautenbach and
Gabby Oddo each put eight kills down, and
Colleen Hannigan served a career-high four aces as SPU swept host Cal State Dominguez Hills, 25-19, 25-19, 25-18.
Junior opposite Lautenbach hit a season-high .286. nearly 160 points better than her previous high of .128 in last Friday's match against Concordia Irvine.
Junior outside hitter Hannigan delivered half of SPU's eight aces, the second straight match in this tournament that the Falcons have had that many. Her previous career high was one, in two different matches. Hannigan had a solid all-around afternoon with seven kills, eight digs, and five total blocks, including a solo.
Gabby Oddo
Sophomore middle blocker
Shaun Crespi logged six block assists, had five kills, and hit .364, with just one error on 11 attacks. Freshman outside hitter Oddo (Alta Loma, Calif.) had a team-leading 14 digs to go along with her eight kills.
SPU had lengthy scoring runs to take control in each of the three games.
"We showed great poise and good composure," Johnson said. "I just liked seeing that killer instinct. That's what volleyball is like sometimes – it's tight, tight, tight, then you go on a run and finish them."
Down 18-17 in Game 1, the Falcons scored eight of the last nine points, including the last five in a row. Up 22-19 with Oddo serving, Hannigan had back-to-back kills to set up game point, and SPU converted on it right away when a Dominguez Hills tip went wide.
Once again in the second game, the Toros (2-4) had an 18-17 lead. Seattle Pacific proceeded to run off the next seven points in a row. Hannigan served the last six of those, and dropped in two of her aces during that run. Dominguez Hills saved one game point at 24-18. But on the next one, Crespi and Tran combined on a block to give it to the Falcons.
The Toros built a 12-8 lead in Game 3. They were still up 15-13 when SPU ran off five straight points to go ahead for good. Lautenbach served the last four of those, the first of which was an ace. Oddo slammed the match-clinching kill.
