SEATTLE – All season long, the Seattle Pacific Falcons have been striving for the night when they put it all together offensively and defensively on the volleyball court.
That night was Thursday.
Lexi Biondi and
Gabby Oddo had 11 kills apiece, and SPU had four players in double-digit kills as it swept past Western Oregon in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match.
Scores were 25-22,25-17, 25-19 in the team's Brougham Pavilion opener after playing the first 10 matches of the season on the road.
Junior opposite
Hannah Lautenbach registered her second double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs. She hit a season-high .308. The double-double was the sixth of her career. Lautenbach (Portland, Ore.) added five block assists to her stat line.
Chris Johnson
"That's the best an SPU team has played in a long time," head coach
Chris Johnson said. "We passed really well tonight, and we were firing on all cylinders. We showed ourselves what we are capable of when we're focused and executing the way we know we're able to. It's exciting – and Western Oregon is a good team. We saw a lot of good things on video, and they just beat Central Washington last week.
"We were ready for a good team, and we rose to the challenge."
The Falcons' brief home stand winds up on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. when Concordia of Oregon comes to town.
Senior outside hitter Biondi (Albuquerque, N.M.) got her first start of the year and hit .385 for the match, with just one error on 26 attacks. It was the second straight match she registered season-highs in both departments, having gone for 10 kills and .269 hitting last Saturday at Alaska Anchorage when she played just the second and third sets.
"Lexi was a good shot in the arm for the lineup. She made great choices tonight," Johnson said "And Symone was making really great choices all night and distributing the ball well."
Freshman outside hitter Oddo (Alta Loma, Calif.) had six digs to go along with her 11 kills and hit .286.
The combined performance of Biondi and Oddo gave SPU (5-6, 1-2 GNAC) a .333 hitting performance from the outside hitter position (22 kills-4 errors-54 attacks).
"She has been an awesome addition to the team and she's really coming out strong," Biondi said of Oddo. "It's just a really fun dynamic, and I think it's working really well. And Symone is doing a fantastic job of getting us great sets to work with."
Tran (Portland, Ore.) finished with 38 assists, and sophomore libero
Amanda Ganete logged 18 digs and a service ace.
Shaun Crespi
Sophomore middle blocker
Shaun Crespi tied two career highs: 10 kills and .500 hitting (10-2-16). She also came up with six block assists.
Seattle Pacific hit a season-high .327, with 44 kills and just 10 errors on 104 attacks. That was 110 points better than its previous season-high of .217 from last Thursday's match at Alaska Fairbanks. In fact, the Falcons topped .300 in all three games: .342 in the first, .316 in the second, and .321 in the third.
The last time SPU hit in the .300s for a match was .366 at Fairbanks on Sept. 19, 2014. It hit .410 in the 2015 season opener against Molloy.
The Falcons were down 20-18 in Game 1, then went ahead for good with four points in a row, and scored seven of the last nine. Except for an early 2-0 deficit, SPU led for most of Game 2, using 6-1 spurt to put it away after Western Oregon had gotten within 18-15.
Seattle Pacific got a big jump in Game 3, going up 13-6. The Wolves twice got within one, the last time at 16-15. The Falcons then rang up five points in a row for 21-15, and the lead never slipped below four after that.
Western Oregon (4-6, 1-2 GNAC) got a double-double of 10 kills and 12 digs from Alisha Bettinson. The Wolves hit .170 for the night (38-19-112).
