SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific Falcons were close … ultimately, though, not close enough.

Hannah Lautenbach, Gabby Oddo, and Symone Tran all had double-doubles on Saturday afternoon, but Concordia came back from losing the opening game, then made a big rally in the third game, and finally beat SPU in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match.

Scores in Brougham Pavilion were 21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 16-25, 15-8.

Hannah
Lautenbach
Junior opposite Lautenbach (Portland, Ore.) slammed a team-high 13 kills and also had 14 digs for her second straight double-double and third of the year. She has eight for her career. Freshman outside hitter Oddo (Alta Loma, Calif.) had 12 kills and 18 digs for her eighth double-double.

Sophomore setter Tran (Portland,Ore.) logged 42 assists and 13 digs for her fifth of the season and 18th of her career. Tran also had a career-high seven total blocks, including two solos.

After splitting the first two games, the Falcons (5-7, 1-3 GNAC) came out strong in Game 3 and forged a 17-11 lead. But Concordia (7-5, 3-1 GNAC) went on an 8-2 run to tie it at 19-19.

It was tied twice more, the last time at 21-21. The Cavaliers then put the next two points on the board and never trailed again.

"We gave them a big run, and we can't do that – that one hurt us," said SPU coach Chris Johnson, whose own team made a surge in the second game to turn a 15-9 deficit into a 16-15 lead before Concordia won it by two.

The Falcons, who had to settle for a split of their first two home matches after starting with 10 straight away from Seattle, are back on the road this coming week. They visit Northwest Nazarene in Idaho on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. Pacific time, and Central Washington next Saturday in Ellensburg at 7:00 p.m.

Amanda Ganete
Sophomore libero Amanda Ganete (Hillsboro, Ore.) had a team-leading 22 digs for SPU. She was one of five Falcons in double-digit digs, as the team had 87, its second-highest total of the season.

7305
Nicole Tchabanov
In addition to Tran's seven blocks, freshman middle blocker Nicole Tchabanov (San Ramon, Calif.) had six, and sophomore middle blocker Shaun Crespi (Camarillo, Calif.) had five, along with a career-high four service aces.

"We had a really great defensive performance tonight, period," Johnson said. "We held them 100 points below their season average (the Cavaliers came in hitting .247, but wound up at just .140 on Saturday). There are some really good things to take away. But we've got to do it all on offense, as well."

Down two games to one, SPU used an early 6-0 run to take charge of the fourth game at 7-2, never letting Concordia get closer than three.

But in the deciding fifth, the Cavs scored the first two points and never trailed. They were up 8-2 at the changeover, thanks in part to a close call and a service ace that rolled off the net cord and dropped onto SPU's side. The closest the Falcons came was four, the last time at 12-8.

7296
Mallie Donohoe
Freshman outside Mallie Donohoe (Wildomar, Calif.) saw her first extensive action, coming on in the second game and recording 11 kills, five digs, and one block assist.

Lautenbach, for the second match in a row, had a solid stat line. In addition to the 13 kills and 14 digs, she had two service aces, five blocks, two assists, and hit .209.

"Hannah is playing very well. She's getting more aggressive and more comfortable being aggressive," Johnson said.

Seattle Pacific hit .106 for the match (48 kills-28 errors-189 attacks). Concordia took three fewer swings and had four more errors, but also finished with 10 more kills.
