SEATTLE – Tanner Omlid nailed 5 of 6 shots from 3-point range en route to a 34-point performance Thursday, lifting Western Oregon to a 76-74 win over Seattle Pacific in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball game at Brougham Pavilion.
The Falcons (6-7) had a chance to win at the buzzer, but
Coleman Wooten's 28-foot 3-point try caromed off the front rim. They fell to 2-3 in league play.
WOU (6-7) improved to 3-2 in GNAC games.
Omlid scored the Wolves' first nine points and later put together a string of 11 consecutive WOU points near the end. His trey with 2:18 left to play turned back a rally that saw the Falcons draw within 70-69 on a steal and layup by
Olivier-Paul Betu, who seconds earlier had hit a 3-point basket.
The triple by Omlid put WOU ahead 73-69. Following two free throws by Falcons' freshman
Tony Miller, Omlid converted two from the line to keep the differential at four points.
SPU senior
Will Parker nailed a trey with 43 seconds showing on the clock to bring the hosts within 75-74. Western's Ali Faruq-Bey set the final score by making the first of two free throws with 16.3 remaining.
Joe Rasmussen compiled 18 of his team-high 20 points during the first half for SPU, which also got 19 from
Tony Miller and 10 from
Gavin Long. Miller grabbed 10 rebounds to spark a 34-29 margin on the boards and notch his fifth double-double.
Parker distributed a career-high eight assists, seven of them coming during the first half.
Omlid shot 13 of 22 from the field. Faruq-Bey finished with 15 points for the Wolves, who defeated SPU for the fifth time in a row.
WOU shot 50 percent (30 of 60) from the field, including 6-for-16 accuracy on 3-pointers, while limiting the Falcons to 40 percent (25 of 62) and 9-of-27 on treys.
SPU led by as many as 10 points during the first half, before trailing by two at halftime.
Rasmussen scored five straight points to provide an early 12-6 led for the Falcons. But they had three turnovers and a missed 3-pointer in their next four possessions, enabling the visitors to claim a 13-12 edge with 13:45 left in the first half.
A driving layup by Betu ignited a 12-2 Falcons run that provided a 31-21 lead.
The Wolves closed with a 21-9 spree over the final seven minutes, including nine points from Omlid. The 6-foot-3 junior forward netted 18 first-half points to fuel his team's 42-40 lead at intermission.
That lead expanded to as many as nine points during the second half after the Wolves got seven straight points. Omlid tallied the first five points of the run that gave his team a 53-44 advantage with 13:45 left to play.
The SPU men stay in Seattle to host Concordia (Ore.) on Saturday. Tip-off is 7 p.m. at Brougham Pavilion. After that, they embark on a stretch of three road games during a six-day span, beginning on Jan. 12 at Central Washington.
