LONG BEACH, Calif. – A quarter-inch here. Three-quarters of an inch there. One centimeter. Two centimeters.
Any way it's measured, that's how close
Geneva Lehnert and
Peyton Harris are to adding their names to the NCAA qualifying list after career-best long jump performances on Saturday.
Seattle Pacific sophomore Lehnert leaped a career-best 18 feet, 10½ inches in the women's competition, and Falcons junior Harris went a best-ever 23-7½ on the men's side to highlight the team's day at the Beach Invitational track and field meet.
Geneva Lehnert
Lehnert (Eugene, Ore.) topped her previous career best of 18-4½, set barely 24 hours earlier at the Bryan Clay Invitational just down the road a bit in Azusa. On the metric scale, Saturday's 18-10½ converts to 5.75 centimeters. The provisional qualifying standard for next month's Division II championship meet is 18-10¾ / 5.76 centimeters.
Peyton Harris
Harris (Boise, Idaho) broke into the 23-foot neighborhood for the first time this spring, his previous best having been 22-9 ¾ at the Hornet Invitational on March 18 in Sacramento. His previous best was 23-5 ½, a distance that won him the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship last May.
His 23-7½ is 7.20 meters, which is good for second on the GNAC list as of Saturday evening. Getting onto the NCAA provisional docket takes a 23-8¼ / 7.22 meters.
Lehnert placed 18th among 72 competitors, and Harris was 19th out of 62.
Both will have numerous opportunities during the next month to get there, with three regular-season meets remaining, plus the GNAC meet. Lehnert will have an additional chance on May 2 while competing in the heptathlon at the GNAC Multi-Event Championships.
EVEN BETTER FOR TAYOR
Falcons freshman
Lani Taylor (Seattle / West Seattle HS), who became an NCAA provisional qualifier in the 400-meter dash on Friday at the Clay, went faster than that on Saturday.
Taylor came across the finish line in 55.84 seconds, a drop from the 55.93 she posted in Azusa.
After starting the outdoor season with a 57.18 on March 18 in Sacramento, Taylor has dropped time in each of her three races since.
AND THAT'S NOT ALL
--Senior
Kyra Brannan, after coming up with career-best performances in the 200-meter dash (24.74) and long jump (19-7) on Friday in Azusa, ran her fastest-ever 100-meter dash on Saturday. Brannan (Kennewick, Wash. / Kamiakin HS) clocked 12.10 seconds. That eclipsed her old PR of 12.18 set last April in Ellensburg.
--Junior
Becca Houk (Oregon City, Ore.) had season-bests in her two sprints: 12.47 in the 100 and 25.70 in the 200. Her 100 time was spot on with the GNAC automatic qualifying standard.
Seattle Pacific will return to action next Saturday in Ellensburg at the Spike Arlt Invitational. Field events at Tomlinson Stadium on the Central Washington University campus begin at 10:00 a.m., and races on the track start at 11:00.
