• Saturday WIRA Results
GOLD RIVER, Calif. – A pair of Seattle Pacific women's crews advanced to Sunday finals and the other two completed their competitions with two races on Saturday at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships on Lake Natoma.
The Falcons top crew opened the day with a third-place performance in its heat of the varsity eight event. They were one spot out of grand finals qualification, instead settling for a berth in the petite final, slated for Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
SPU covered the 2,000-meter course in 7-minutes, 2.53-seconds to cross the line six seats ahead of Puget Sound (7:05.43). Pacific Lutheran won the heat in 6:45.01 followed by Humboldt State in 6:52.44. Sonoma State was fifth in 7:38.38.
Western Washington (6:41.37) and UC San Diego (6:43.16) won the other two varsity eight heats.
The Falcons featured crew contains six rowers in their first year of collegiate competition. That youthful unit has steadily become faster throughout the season. An indication of that improvement came in Saturday's heat as they were nearly three seconds superior to Puget Sound's top boat after losing by 15 seconds to the Loggers No. 2 crew in the March 11 season opener.
"That was a good heat race for our varsity eight," said first-year SPU coach
Andrew Derrick. "We surprised Puget Sound, so they will be tougher to get again in the final. We lost to their second varsity in early March and just finished ahead of their varsity today, so that shows real progress."
Coxswain Jacqueline Kemp and SPU's stern pair
Freshman coxswain
Jacqueline Kemp and the stern four from SPU's varsity eight competed Saturday afternoon in the novice four race. Rowers
Chloe Remley,
Amanda Larsen,
Briana Inman and
Kaitlin Dickinson powered the four-oared crew to an impressive open-water heat victory.
The first-year Falcons earned a spot in the novice four grand final on Sunday at 12:10 p.m. Oregon had a second-place time of 8:00.43 and was followed by UC Irvine (8:09.50), PLU (8:11.01), Long Beach State (8:30.68) and Lewis & Clark (8:32.43).
SPU's winning time of 7:47.67 was third fastest during qualifying, trailing only the top-two boats from the second heat, Western Washington (7:39.00) and Loyola Marymount (7:42.70). Stanford's lightweight crew won the other heat in 7:52.42.
The other two SPU boats raced twice on Saturday, including afternoon finals, and are done for the weekend.
A fourth-place result in the morning heats sent SPU into the second varsity eight petite final. Their preliminary time of 7:54.26 was well off the winning pace of 7:01.01 established by UC Santa Barbara.
The Falcons, directed by coxswain
Kaylah Amis, crossed the finish line first in the second varsity petite final that was limited to two boats after UC Irvine scratched. Their winning time of 8:03.84 was over 37 seconds faster than the 8:40.94 turned in by Mills College.
In the competition for varsity fours, SPU was a distant fifth in the heat with a time of 8:11.26. Long Beach State was the victor in 7:26.40 and the
Paige Ortiz-coxed Falcons finished well ahead of sixth-place Chapman (8:23.34) and Portland State (9:01.69).
SPU's four-oared entry matched its heat result with a fifth-place showing in the third final. UC San Diego was first (8:00.06) followed by UC Santa Barbara (8:06.33), Pacific Lutheran (8:14.90), Long Beach State (8:27.26), SPU (8:32.06), Chapman (8:48.84) and Portland State (9:34.58).
Next week the Falcons conclude the season at the Windermere Cup. The card of 24 races begins at 10:20 a.m. on the Montlake Cut. SPU will be represented by the varsity eight crew in a race that is scheduled for 10:59 a.m.
