HONOLULU – She's only a freshman. But at crunch time on Friday night, Olivia Turner played like a veteran.

The outside hitter slammed a kill to help fight off a game point in the opener, then had kills on two of the last three points in Game 2, and the last two points in Game 3 as Seattle Pacific completed a sweep of Hawaii Pacific on the second night of the Hawaii Challenge.

Scores on HPU's home court at St. Andrew's Priory were 30-28, 26-24, 25-20.

The Falcons are now 2-0 for the first time since 2010. In the six seasons since then, they split their first two contests.

"It felt like a five-game match," said head coach Abbie Wright, whose team scored a dramatic come-from-behind five-game win against UC Colorado Springs just 24 hours earlier. "There's no really easy game in that gym against them.

"I'm really proud of our kids for staying resilient and being consistent when we needed to be," she added. "We pulled out some clutch points and made some big-time plays to get up by one at the right moment."

Olivia Turner
Turner (Phoenix, Ariz.) finished with 13 kills for the second night in row. She also had that many in Thursday's against Colorado Springs. She hit .250 on Friday, with just four errors on 36 attacks.

"I love the confidence she plays with," Wright said. "Tonight, she stepped up in some big moments."

Some of those biggest moments came when each of the three games was on the line.

SPU scored the first four points of the match and led through most of Game 1, including 19-15. But then clinging to a 22-21 advantage, the Falcons saw Hawaii Pacific run off three points in a row for a 24-22 advantage.

Back-to-back Sharks hitting errors brought it back into a 24-24 tie. Seattle Pacific had three tries at game point (25-24, 26-25, 27-26), then was down a game point at 28-27 when Turner tied it on a kill. Sophomore middle blocker Nicole Tchabanov (San Ramon, Calif.) had a kill for 29-28, then an HPU hitting error closed it out in the Falcons' favor.

SPU was up by as many as five midway through Game 2, and later had an 18-14 lead before the Sharks stormed back and went up 24-23. Turner tied it with a kill, Tchabanov and senior Colleen Hannigan combined on a block for a 25-24 lead, then Turner sealed it with another kill.

Down 9-5 in the third game, SPU went on an 11-3 tear, including four straight to snap a 12-12 tie that put them in front for good. Turner closed it out with back-to-back kills.

"Something we did really well during crunch time was we served really tough and made some key digs," Wright said. "Hawaii teams are known for their defense, so to out-dig a team like that (64-56) is no small feat."
