LACEY, Wash. – The road continues to be a welcoming place for the Seattle Pacific Falcons.
Gabby Oddo put her ninth straight double-double into the books, and
Jaeden Hooker supplied nine kills and a pair of block assists on Tuesday night as SPU swept Saint Martin's in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match.
Scores in Marcus Pavilion were 25-15, 25-16, 25-21.
The Falcons, who got their overall record back to level again at 10-10 and improved to 8-5 in conference play, won their third straight match, all on the road. Their past two have been sweeps.
"Their response the past two weeks has been really good," said head coach
Abbie Wright, whose team had lost four in a row – three of those in a fifth game – before putting together their current string of victories. "It's tough to come off of five-game losses. But we're doing a good job reflecting and taking things we need to grow from and tweaking what we need to tweak. We've found our rhythm."
Junior outside hitter Oddo had 10 kills and 12 digs for the Falcons (10-10, 8-5 GNAC), who got their record back to level. Along with an ace and two block assists, Oddo accounted for 12 for points, leaving her just two short of 1,000 for her career. She hit.385 for the night, with no errors on 26 attacks.
The Falcons snapped a 7-7 tie in Game 1 with four straight points for an 11-7 lead. Saint Martin's (3-16, 1-12 GNAC) never got closer than two after that.
After yielding the first point of the second game, SPU put three straight on the board and led the rest of the way
Seattle Pacific had a seemingly comfortable 20-12 lead in Game 3, but Saint Martin's bounced back, getting as close as two points on three occasions, the last time at 23-21. A tip by sophomore middle blocker
Gabi Stegemoller gave the Falcons a match point at 24-21, and senior setter
Symone Tran converted it with a serve that flicked off the net cord and dropped in for an ace.
"Our serve receive was really good tonight – you can do a lot when you're passing well," Wright said. "They're a good-serving team, so we said, 'Let's make sure we're disciplined," and we had really good eye work."
The Falcons certainly had some clear vision when it came to hitting accuracy on Tuesday, as they finished at a season-best .320 with 41 kills and just nine errors on 100 attacks. Their previous best was .271, which came in a sweep of Saint Martin's in Seattle on Sept. 18.
