Nighthawks lead most of the way to take down Seattle Pacific in Brougham

SEATTLE – All week long, Seattle Pacific has been in need of an offensive spurt on the volleyball court.

All week long, the Falcons simply weren't able to find one.

Hailey Gaines had 11 kills on Saturday, and Symone Tran double-doubled for the 14th time this season, but SPU was swept away by Northwest Nazarene in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match.

Scores in Brougham Pavilion were 25-18, 25-21, 25-20.

The Falcons (10-13, 8-8 GNAC) were on the wrong end of the broom in both home contests this week, as Central Washington scored the three-game victory on Thursday.

"Too many unforced errors," head coach Abbie Wright said. "We beat ourselves on the service line (eight errors) and we gave up a game of hitting errors (25 altogether). That's really hard to get any traction when you keep beating yourself like that. And NNU is really well coached."

Redshirt senior outside hitter Gaines was the only Seattle Pacific player in double-digit kills. She also delivered two of the team's three service aces. Junior outside hitter Gabby Oddo was limited to eight. Sophomore outside hitter Maddie Batiste, who got her third start of the year, had seven.

Senior setter Tran had 36 assists and 20 digs, pushing her career double-double total to 59. Her career assist total is now 3,953, leaving her just 57 away from breaking the school record of 4,009.

The Falcons scored three of the first four points, but Northwest Nazarene (6-17, 6-10) responded with a run of five in a row. Seattle Pacific eventually climbed back into a tie at 11-11, then the Nighthawks went on an 8-1 run to take command of the opening game at 19-12.

SPU's only other lead the rest of the day was at 15-14 midway through a back-and-forth Game 2. Tied at 16-16, NNU put four straight on the board.

The Nighthawks built a quick 6-0 lead in the third game. Seattle Pacific cut the gap to just one point at 7-6. Northwest Nazarene built it back up to five at 12-7, and it never dipped below three the rest of the day.

"I think we're totally capable of bouncing back," Wright said in looking ahead to next week's two matches in Alaska. "When it's hard and a struggle, you definitely grow the most in those times. It has been a hard week for sure, but I'm excited to see what growth comes from it."

BY THE NUMBERS
-- NNU now has 13 straight wins against the Falcons, dating back to 2012.
--SPU wound up with four more kills on Saturday (39-25) and 14 more attacks (139-125), but the Nighthawks committed 13 fewer attack errors (12, compared to 25 for the Falcons). Seattle Pacific hit .101 for the day; NNU was at .184. Senior middle blocker Shaun Crespi led the way for SPU at .286 (6 kills-2 errors-14 attacks).
--Crespi came up with three total blocks, giving her sole possession of No. 5 on the program's all-time list in that category with 415. She had been deadlocked with Gaylene MacDonald at 412. Crespi needs four more to catch up with No. 4 Nikki Lowell.
--Senior libero Amanda Ganete's 18 digs lifted her into No. 3 in the program's career rankings. Her current total of 1,557 nudged out Torii Mount, who had 1,552 from 2005-08. With four matches left, Ganete needs just 14 more to claim the No. 2 spot from Brianna Leenders (1,570 from 2011-14).

UP NEXT
Seattle Pacific takes its final road trip of the season when it heads to Alaska this coming week. First up is Anchorage on Thursday, followed by Fairbanks next Saturday. Both matches begin at 8:00 p.m. Pacific time. The Falcons will be trying to get even after dropping five-gamers to both teams earlier this month in Brougham Pavilion.
