SEATTLE – They had the lead. However, it turned out to be not enough of a lead for the Seattle Pacific Falcons.

Hailey Gaines had 14 kills, one of three SPU players in double digits, but Simon Fraser stormed back from a 24-20 deficit in the second game, scoring the last six points to take that one, and went on to take the Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match on Thursday night, 3-1.

Scores in Brougham Pavilion were 25-16, 26-24, 20-25, 25-17.

The outcome was the second straight loss for SPU (11-15, 9-10 GNAC), and gave the Clan (14-11, 11-8 GNAC) a split of the season series.

"Simon Fraser is a good team, and they've gotten better," Falcons head coach Abbie Wright said. "Sometimes when we needed to capitalize, we couldn't. We weren't able to shut down a couple of their run. They played great, and at times, we played really well. We just couldn't sustain it longer."

Gabby Oddo
Gabby Oddo added 12 kills for Seattle Pacific and made it a double-double with 18 digs. Gabi Stegemoller added 11 kills.

Senior setter Symone Tran logged her 60th career double-double, this one with 45 assists and 17 digs.

Simon Fraser took control of the opening game from the outset, building a 5-1 lead. Seattle Pacific closed within 12-9, but the Clan went on a 7-2 run to take command at 19-11.

The Falcons were on the verge of pulling the match even in Game 2. Tied at 17-17, they ran off four straight points. They were still up four at 24-20 when Simon Fraser started to come back. A Seattle Pacific attack error made it 24-21, then two straight Clan kills cut it to 24-23.

Tamara Clarke then factored into the next three points: a combined block with Angelica Kilberg for a 24-24 tie, then back-to-back kills for the final two points to secure the game.

SPU stayed alive in Game 3, scoring five straight points to snap a 15-15 tie: a kill by Hailey Gaines, one from Gabi Stegemoller, a Simon Fraser attack errors, then back-to-back kills by Maddie Batiste.

The Falcons were up 9-8 in Game 4, but the Clan scored four straight as part of a 9-1 surge that them up 17-10. They stayed comfortably in front the rest of the way.

"We had some great opportunities," Wright said. "Our middles  have grown a lot and gotten a lot more versatile, and this match showed that. Gabi Stegemoller had one of her best nights, showing the hard work she has put in. Hailey had some good looks, and Symone Tran did a good job of spreading the offense out."
