PORTLAND, Ore. – While
Coleman Wooten inflicted much of the damage inside it was the feathery touch of
Nikhil Lizotte that turned the tide in Seattle Pacific's seventh road win of the season.
After Concordia closed the gap to a single point, it was a late, double-pump 19-footer from the left side that sparked the Falcons' final push in an 80-70 Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball victory Saturday night.
Lizotte's shot commenced a spurt of nine straight points for SPU, which has now alternated wins and losses for eight games. Seattle Pacific (14-9, 9-7) remains in the top half of the standings with four games remaining in the regular season. A stretch of four straight road games resumes Tuesday night at Saint Martin's.
Coleman Wooten
Wooten and
Nathan Streufert were effectively a one-two punch to the gut of the Cavaliers (0-16, 4-20), who lost their 20th straight. Wooten, converting 11 of 15 attempts in and around the paint, finished with a season-best 24 points and 11 rebounds, his second straight double-double, as the visitors cleaned the boards, 34-25. He also had six assists, tying for team-high playmaker honors with freshman
Braden Olsen.
Streufert, 6 of 9 from the floor, added 16 and eight rebounds.
Bryan Michaels topped Concordia with 23 but missed a pair of shots during the Falcons' decisive run. In between, Wooten flipped in an 8-foot hook.
Streufert's 3-pointer from the right corner with 52 seconds remaining was the knockout blow, making it 74-66.
Gavin Long sank four free throws and
Braden Olsen two in the final minute.
Seattle Pacific never trailed in the second half yet could not pull away until late.
Gabe Colosimo's driving layup early in the second period capped a 12-4 stretch that begin shortly before halftime. Lizotte's basket at the buzzer had made it 40-37.
Concordia, which had come within two points in a 74-72 loss at Brougham Pavilion a month ago, forged 18-11 lead following the second of back-to-back threes by Michaels. After going six minutes without a field goal, Wooten methodically brought his team back. He and Streufert combined to score the Falcons' next 14 points to regain the lead.
Seattle Pacific shot a season-high 60 percent (32 of 53) compared to the Cavs' 46 percent (29 of 63) and was a plus-14 in the paint (48-34). After shooting 58.6 percent in the first half (17 of 29), the Falcons were even more efficient in the second, converting shots at a 62.5-percent clip (15 of 24).
Colosimo scored 10 points and Lizotte added seven off the bench.
Concordia's Jarrett Gray, who had 27 in the first meeting, contributed 15 but missed 11 of 17 attempts.
The SPU men remain on the road for a pair of games next week. They visit Saint Martin's on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before concluding the road portion of their schedule with a 4:15 p.m. Pacific Time game on Saturday at Montana State Billings.
The next home game for the Falcons is Feb. 22 with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Central Washington.
