FRESNO, Calif. – Different volleyball matches, but the same story for the Seattle Pacific Falcons.
They could not get into a groove on offense.
Hailey Gaines
Hailey Gaines had seven kills on Friday afternoon – the most she has had in an SPU uniform since joining the team this season – but the Falcons were swept by Chico State in the D2 West Region Showcase tournament.
Scores in the Special Events Center at Fresno Pacific University were 25-17, 26-24, 25-17.
Gabby Oddo
On Friday night,
Gabby Oddo recorded nine kills, but that wasn't nearly enough as Seattle Pacific was swept again, this time by Chaminade. Scores were 25-17, 25-20, 25-13.
The Falcons had just 46 kills in the two matches combined – 27 against Chico, 19 against Chaminade. The Wildcats and Silverswords had a combined 97 kills.
SPU hit minus-.010 versus Chico State and .051 versus Chaminade.
"Overall, we had some good looks and tried to execute some things," head coach
Abbie Wright said. "It was a little bit tough because we were playing (against) so many good hitters and we fell a little bit behind. We're playing a lot of really good teams, and we have to figure them out quick on the fly. It took us too long to catch up."
Chico State 3, Falcons 0
Senior opposite Gaines, a redshirt senior who played previously at Concordia Irvine, had the best hitting percentage among the regular attackers for SPU, finishing at .278 with just two errors on 18 swings.
"Hailey was playing aggressively, and it was fun to see her go off a little bit," Wright said.
Gabi Stegemoller
Sophomore middle blocker
Gabi Stegemoller added six kills and four blocks, including a solo. Senior middle
Shaun Crespi also had four blocks.
Senior setter
Symone Tran logged 21 assists, and senior libero
Amanda Ganete came up with 12 digs.
Up 19-17 in the opening game, undefeated Chico State (5-0) scored the last six points to finish it. In Game 2, the Wildcats snapped a 20-20 tie with a 4-1 run, only to see Seattle Pacific fight back to tie it at 24-24 on a kill by Gaines, a combined block by Stegemoller and Tran, and a solo block by Stegemoller. But Chico subsequently got the final two points.
The Wildcats went up 10-6 in the third game and never let the Falcons get closer than three after that, the last time at 18-15.
Chaminade 3, Falcons 0
The Silverswords (4-0) jumped to an 11-4 lead in the opening game, and stayed at least five points ahead the rest of the way.
SPU found some spark in the second game, going on a 6-1 run to turn a 17-12 deficit into an 18-18 tie, as junior
Mallie Donohoe was on the serve for three of those points. But Chaminade responded with a 4-0 run of its own to take command at 22-18.
The Falcons were within striking distance midway through Game 3, down just 13-10. That's when the Silverswords put eight straight points on the board for a 21-10 bulge and effectively sealing the deal.
Symone Tran tallied 16 assists, and
Amanda Ganete had 10 digs.
"I was talking to the girls and it's not so much that we lost, but how are we going to react to it, and how are we going to come back and respond?" Wright said. "We're learning a lot of stuff and shifting people around. Figuring that out is what preseason is all about."
BY THE NUMBERS
--
Shaun Crespi had 8.5 points in the two matches combined, pushing her past 700 for her career. She now has 700.5. She had an error-free match (3-0-7, .429 hitting) against Chaminade.
--
Tran had back-to-back error-free matches: 2-0-6 against Chico, 1-0-6 against Chaminade, to go along with her 37 assists in the two matches combined. "Symone did the best she could in the situation of playing tough teams, and she led really well today," Wright said.
