BURNABY, B.C. – On Thursday night, the Seattle Pacific Falcons proved they could battle with a tough team on the road.

On Saturday, they proved they could beat a tough team …

… on the road.

Jaeden Hooker
Junior outside hitter Hooker nearly doubled her previous career high for kills, as she had eight in the season-opening victory against Fresno Pacific on Aug. 24. Hooker hit a solid .361 with just two errors on a career-best 36 attacks. She added four block assists – also a career high, never having had more than one in any previous match.

Fellow junior outside hitter Oddo made it a double-double, coming up with 11 digs to go along with her 15 kills. She delivered two service aces and hit .255.

8156
Symone Tran
Senior setter Symone Tran hit two milestones in one night. She recorded her 50th career double-double, this one with 45 assists (a season high) and 10 digs. The digs total pushed her past 1,000 for her career in that department. She now has 1,005.

In Thursday's match against No. 12-ranked Western Washington in Bellingham, the Falcons dropped the first two games, but came back to snag the third and stay alive. They fell behind early in the fourth game but battled back into a 20-20 tie before the Vikings put it away.

On Saturday, Seattle Pacific (3-6, 1-1 GNAC) dropped the first game again, then took the next two.

With the Falcons up 2 games to 1, the fourth game featured 19 ties and nine lead changes. The Falcons had a match point at 24-23, but Amanda Ganete's serve went long. Simon Fraser (4-4, 1-1 GNAC) had a chance at 25-24 to force a deciding fifth game. Oddo tied it with a kill.

The Clan got another opportunity at 26-25. Oddo came through with another kill to tie it at 26-26, and then took over the serve. Hooker and sophomore middle Gabi Stegemoller combined on a block to give Seattle Pacific a second match-point opportunity at 27-26. Stegemoller than clinched it with a kill.

SPU was never out of the opening game, but could never quite catch up after Simon Fraser (4-4, 1-1 GNAC) scored three straight to snap a 10-10 tie.

The second game was tied at 18-18 when the Falcons put four in a row on the board, three of those points coming on Clan net violations. Simon got within 22-21, then Seattle Pacific got the final three points on an SFU service error, a kill by Hailey Gaines, and a Clan attack error.

Down 9-5 in Game 3, SPU ran off eight straight points, the last seven of those with Oddo on the serve. She, Hooker, and Gaines had two kills apiece during that provided a, 13-9 advantage. Another 4-0 run, with Hooker supplying two kills, broke a 14-14 tie, and the Falcons never let Simon Fraser catch up again.
