Falcons Fall at 16th-Ranked SMU, 80-63

SPU men lose second straight to drop out of second-place in GNAC standings

LACEY, Wash. – Chandler Redix compiled 14 of his 24 points during the first half Tuesday, with 4-for-6 accuracy on 3-pointers, to help 16th-ranked Saint Martin's build an early lead en route to an 80-63 win over Seattle Pacific in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball matchup at Marcus Pavilion.

The Falcons (9-5) lost their second straight game, including Saturday's 73-71 setback at Western Oregon that stopped a seven-game winning streak. They moved to 6-3 in league play to drop out of a three-way tie for second place.

SMU (15-2) retained sole possession of first place, improving its GNAC record to 8-1. The Saints defeated SPU for the sixth straight time.

Entering the game ranked 11th nationally in field goal percentage at 50.8%, the Falcons were held to a season-low 35.5% (22 of 62) by the swarming SMU defense. SPU had not shot below 40 percent all season.

The Saints countered with 46.8-percent accuracy (29 of 62), a figure that featured 12-for-32 shooting behind the 3-point arc.

Harry Cavell led SPU with 15 points and Gavin Long totaled 12, with 10 of those coming in the second half.

Nathan Streufert and Coleman Wooten each chipped in nine points. A product of nearby Tahoma High School, Wooten increased his career total to 998 points. He needs two more to become the 36th player in SPU history to amass 1,000 points.

Streufert grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds, just two shy of his career-best total, to lead the visitors' 47-39 advantage on the boards.

Redix drained his first five shots and finished at 9-for-12 for the night. Teammates Jordan Kitchen and EJ Boyce each tallied 11 points and Luke Chavez had 10.

A layup and 3-pointer by Wooten provided a 7-3 lead for SPU just two minutes into the contest.

The Saints scored the next nine points, all on treys, to ignite a 16-2 run. Redix sparked the surge with nine points, on a trio of 3-pointers.

After four consecutive Falcons free throws, Redix nailed back-to-back baskets on a jumper and trey, to produce a 24-13 lead for the hosts with 9:08 left in the first half.

SPU trimmed the margin to 34-27 on a four-point play by Cavell that he following with a spinning jumper with 2:29 left in the period.

Saint Martin's netted the final five points of the period to forge a 39-27 halftime advantage. That was first double-digit deficit the Falcons had faced at intermission this season.

The Saints shot 42 percent (14 of 33) in the first half, including a stellar 8-for-19 on 3-pointers while holding SPU to 31-percent accuracy (9 of 29).

After turning the ball over just four times in the first half, the Falcons committed 11 miscues during the second to limit their ability to rally. SMU had only five turnovers the entire game.

A 10-2 spree early after halftime drew SPU within 48-42. Four different players scored during the run that concluded on a layup by Streufert with 15:15 left to play.

SMU answered with a surge of its own, getting six straight points to fuel an 11-3 run. Rhett Baerlocher concluded that stretch with his first of three consecutive treys, netting a 59-45 lead with 11:01 remaining.

The Falcons never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way and the lead increased to a high of 19, at 76-57, on a jumper by Chavez with 3:46 showing on the clock.

The SPU men complete their current four-game road stretch on Saturday at Montana State Billings. Tip-off is 4:15 p.m. Pacific Time.

The next home game for the Falcons is Jan. 31 at 5:15 p.m. against Simon Fraser as the opener of a basketball doubleheader with the women in Brougham Pavilion.
