Falcons Sink Saints, Back in 'W' Column

SPU gets all it can handle from Saint Martin's before prevailing in four

SEATTLE – They got all they could handle from Saint Martin's on Tuesday night.

But as the match went on, the Seattle Pacific Falcons figured out how to handle it.

Maddie

Maddie Batiste
Batiste had her second straight 20-20 – this time with 20 kills and a career-high 22 digs – and Gabby Oddo added 16 kills as SPU turned aside the Saints in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match.

Scores in Brougham Pavilion were 25-19, 19-25, 25-20, 25-19.

The Falcons (12-13, 9-8 GNAC) got back on track after dropping matches against Western Washington and Simon Fraser last week.

"It took us a little bit to settle into their offense and figure out what they were doing," Falcons head coach Abbie Wright said. "Saint Martin's passed really well tonight, and it was hard to get them out of system. Once we did that, we were kind of able to narrow it down. I'm proud of our players for sticking to our scouting report and making adjustments when we needed to."

In last Saturday's contest against Simon Fraser on Iron Coaching Court, junior opposite / outside hitter Batiste logged a double career high of 22 kills an 20 digs. Now, the digs career high already has been rewritten.

"I just feel really confident playing beside everyone," Batiste said. "Lindsey (Lambert) has been distributing the ball really well, so that really helps. With the block on the other side and getting Jaeden (Hooker) more involved and the middles more involved, it helps me and Gabby a ton. Then on defense, I've just changed my mindset. Instead of shying away from balls, I'm just getting out there and going for it."

QUICK SPU START, THEN SAINTS FOUND THEIR GROOVE
The Falcons led for the entirety of Game 1, but Saint Martin's (0-26, 0-17 GNAC), after being down 8-3 early, closed to 10-9. Seattle Pacific responded with an 8-0 run, the last seven of those points with Oddo on the serve.

It was the same kind of thing in Game 2 – but in reverse order. This time, it was the Saints up by one at 13-12 when they went on a big run, ringing up six straight points. They had some solid hitting in that game at .342 with 15 kills and just two errors on 38 attacks. SPU never came closer than four, making it even at one game apiece.

The Saints stayed a point ahead for the first half of Game 3. But, down 11-10, The Falcons rang up three straight to make it 13-10, then later added a 4-0 burst to extend a 15-14 lead to 19-14. In that game, they hit .341 with 18 kills – five each by Batiste, Oddo, and senior outside hitter Hooker.

Then, Game 4 was all SPU, as it scored the first three points, never trailed and was never tied.

"Once we started to put a couple balls away and figure out the areas of the court that were successful for us and our hitters got a little confidence, we were able to settle in and move forward," Wright said. "Gabby and Maddie did a good job of moving the ball around and settling into spots we thought were open."

BY THE NUMBERS
-- Seattle Pacific beat Saint Martin's for the 36th straight time, a streak that started in 2002.
-- The Falcons hit .239 for the match (58 kills-21 errors-155 attacks). Saint Martin's finished at .150 (47-22-167).
-- Gabby Oddo had 14 digs to go along with her 16 kills for her 51st career double-double and 15th of the year. Maddie Batiste now has 15 for the season and 16 for her career.
-- Freshman setter Lindsey Lambert logged her second straight double-double, this one with 39 assists and 16 digs. She now has five.
-- Lambert's 39 assists give her 764 for the season. She needs 69 more in the final three matches to surpass the 832 that current program record-holder Symone Tran had as a freshman in 2015.
-- Oddo and freshman middle blocker Delaney Dunham both topped.300 hitting. Oddo finished at .311 (16-2-45), and Dunham at .364 (5-1-11).
