ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Freshman
Shaw Anderson poured in a career-high 20 points Tuesday afternoon while
Harry Cavell posted a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double for Seattle Pacific, which defeated Sonoma State 75-55 at The Wolves Den.
A product of Kelso (Wash.) High School, Anderson became the first Falcon to reach the 20-point plateau this season. The 6-foot-6 forward nailed 6 of 8 shots from the field, including 3-for-4 accuracy on 3-pointers. He converted 5 of 6 free throws.
Tuesday was the first double-digit scoring game as a collegian for Anderson, whose previous high game was a nine-point output versus Azusa Pacific on Nov. 15.
"We've seen it in practice so it was really nice to see Shaw carry that over into a game as he becomes more comfortable in our system," SPU coach
Grant Leep said of Anderson. "He's had that ability all along and we know that he can really score the ball. We just loved the efficiency that he did it with tonight.
"Not only that, but he had some really nice passes out of the post. On a night when he missed only two shots, for him to continue to play unselfishly speaks to the level of player that Shaw is."
Anderson was named the 2019 state of Washington Class 3A Player of the Year by the
Associated Press.
Young Falcons Learning to Fly
After starting the season with four losses, the young Falcons (2-4) won for the second straight time on the road. Seven of the 12 players to participate in a game this season for SPU are underclassmen, including three freshmen, two red-shirt freshmen and two sophomores.
Sophomore point guard
Divant'e Moffitt tallied 12 of his 14 points during the first half to help Seattle Pacific construct an early lead that would never be seriously challenged.
Gavin Long chipped in 10 points.
Cavell registered the first double-double of the season for the Falcons and the second of his career. He threw down a fastbreak dunk four minutes into the second half that turned back a Sonoma comeback attempt.
HARRY CAVELL DUNK
"Not only did Harry score the ball and also rebound, but he guarded their best player and held him nine points under his average," Leep said of Cavell's defense on Isaac Davidson. Sonoma's 6-foot-7 forward entered the game averaging 20.3 points per game and had 11 Tuesday.
"One of the things that we've really challenged Harry with is to be one of the better two-way players in the GNAC, to play at a high level on both offense and defense. He did that today. He's such a versatile player and he's playing at such a high level right now."
Kenny Olsen scored 13 points to lead the Seawolves (2-4), who also got 12 from Michael Smith and 11 from Isaac Davidson.
SPU shot 56 percent for the game (28 of 50), a figure lowered after a 42-percent period followed a torrid first half. The Falcons hit 8 of 22 attempts from behind the arc and 11 of 14 free throws.
Cavell's 10 boards led a 33-18 domination in rebounding.
The Seawolves shot 42 percent (19 of 45), but made only 3 of 16 treys and 14 of 21 free throws.
The visitors raced out to a 19-10 lead in the opening seven minutes and never looked back. They owned a 41-26 advantage at intermission after shooting a sizzling 69 percent (18 of 26) in the first half.
Moffitt sparked the shooting success with 6-for-7 accuracy en route to his 12-point half. Two of his points came on an impressive drive into the lane and scoop-shot layup five minutes into the contest.
DIVANT'E MOFFITT SCOOP SHOT
That play started a run of six straight points that ignited a 10-2 spree, producing the first double-figure lead of the game. The Falcons increased a 13-10 edge to 23-12 after El Mardi's layup with 11:25 left in the first half.
SPU dominated nearly every aspect of the first half, including a commanding 18-7 rebounding margin.
Foul Woes
The only downside for the Falcons during the opening 20 minutes was the foul disparity. They were whistled for 13 fouls to just three for Sonoma.
Five SPU players collected two first-half fouls, each including starting center
Filip Fullerton who headed to the bench with 6:21 showing on the clock after picking up his third foul. He was limited to just seven minutes of playing time before halftime while starting guard
Gavin Long, the team's leading scorer on the season, played just eight.
No Sonoma players were pinned with more than one first-half foul.
None of the Falcons ended up being disqualified, but Fullerton, Anderson, Long and
Mehdi El Mardi finished the game with four fouls apiece.
Repelling a Rally
The Seawolves managed to trim their deficit to 10 points, at 54-44, on a hook shot by Wesley Gilbert with 9:42 remaining. That is as close they could come as SPU netted the next four points.
Moffitt was fouled on a fastbreak drive to the basket and Olsen was called for a flagrant foul. That gave Moffitt two attempts from the charity stripe, which he made, and SPU retained the ball. Anderson capped the extended possession with a pair of free throws.
Despite the offensive heroics, Leep was most proud of his team's effort on the other end of the floor. They held an opponent under 60 points for the first time this season while forcing 16 turnovers.
"We took it to another level today with our defense. Every time that we've played, we've been getting better.
"The last two games we've just played to our identity and who we are as a group. We just need to continue to build on what we've been doing. Just stay the course."

The Falcons men continue their six-game road trip on Saturday afternoon in San Diego. They take on 2019 NCAA Division II national runner-up Point Loma at 2 p.m.
