SEATTLE – This time, the Seattle Pacific Falcons gave Western Washington a run for it.
Gabby Oddo and
Maddie Batiste each had 11 kills, and Oddo came up with the 1,000
th dig of her career to reach the "triple thousand of kills, points, and digs, but No. 4-ranked WWU still had the upper hand on Thursday night, beating the Falcons in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match, 3-0.
Scores in Brougham Pavilion were 25-20, 25-17, 25-11, as SPU's season-high six-match winning streak was halted.
Last month in Bellingham, it was all Vikings, all night as they won handily, 25-14, 25-8, 25-7.
"Being competitive is definitely a difference," SPU head coach
Abbie Wright said in comparing the two matches. "We were taking our shots when we had them tonight – we took some rips. … We had some moments when we looked sharp and some moments when we didn't."
Gabby Oddo
Oddo started the night with 999 career digs. Her 1,000
th came midway through Game 1.
In surpassing 1,000 digs, the senior outside hitter became just the third player in the 34-year history of the Seattle Pacific program to achieve a "triple thousand." She reached 1,000 kills and 1,000 points last season, and began her final year needing 250 digs to get to a grand in that category.
Oddo's numbers on Thursday were 11 kills, 13 points, and four digs. Her career totals are now 1,291 kills, 1,459 points, and 1,003 digs.
The only two other Falcons to pull off the triple thousand were Stephanie Huffman from 1997-2000 and Leilani Kamahoahoa from 1998-2001. Oddo also is the 19
th player in the 19-year history of the GNAC to achieve that.
"She has grown so much as an athlete," Wright said. "She has been super-skilled her whole career. Each year, she has gotten better, and that's a testament to her hard work and aiming for what she wants to do."
HANGING WITH THEM
Although the Vikings (22-1, 14-1 GNAC) scored the first four points of the match on Iron Coaching Court, Seattle Pacific (11-12, 8-7 GNAC) battled back and tied it at 7-7. It stayed within three points all the way to 16-15 when Western strung together four straight to make it 20-15.
WWU bolted to a 9-1 advantage in Game 2. The Falcons rallied again, getting as close as two on three occasions, the last time at 17-15. Again, the Vikings had an answer, this time with six consecutive points to make it 23-15.
Seattle Pacific was within two points toward the middle of Game 3, down just 10-8. Western Washington put five straight and seven of the next eight on the board to take command at 17-10.
"Once Western gets in a rhythm, they're hard to stop," Wright said. "Against a team like this, it's hard to give up easy points and recover from that."
