SEATTLE – After a promising start, Seattle Pacific's offense stalled in the second half, and the Falcons fell for the second night in a row on Saturday, 64-58, to Cal Poly Pomona in the second round of the Sodexo Classic men's basketball tournament on Iron Coaching Court at Brougham Pavilion.

Harry Cavell scored 18 points and Gavin Long had 16 plus eight rebounds for SPU, which also was kept under 60 points (53) by Chico State on Friday. Seattle Pacific (0-2) averaged more than 78 points per game last season and is picked to finish second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference this winter.

The Falcons, who won their first 11 home games in 2018-19, now have dropped three in a row dating back to last season.

Riley Schaefer of Cal Poly Pomona (1-1) led all players with 19 points, connecting on 7 of 11 shots. William Christmas had 16 and made two key plays in the late stages.

Christmas blocked Long's lay-up attempt with 7:18 to go – his third rejection of the game – and then drove down the left side of the lane for a layup with 38 seconds remaining to make it 62-58. He later added two free throws.

The Broncos, who did not take their first lead until the 7:12 mark, finished the game on a 16-7 run.

A short-range jump-hook by Justin Young put the visitors ahead to stay, 55-53, and he slammed home a rebound to make it 59-56 with 2:34 left.

Cavell scored the final SPU points with 92 seconds to go. The Falcons missed three field-goal attempts and committed two turnovers down the stretch.

Seattle Pacific, which shot 50 percent in the first half, finished just 21 of 51 from the floor. Pomona overcame a cold start to finish at a 48 percent clip (24-50).

The Broncos, who trailed by as many as 15 in the first period, surged to start the second, scoring the first six points to pull even for the first time, 33-33.

However, SPU responded with an 11-2 spurt to go on top, 46-37, following Zack Paulsen's three-pointer. Within three minutes, Cal Poly Pomona was even, with Christmas finishing nine unanswered points with a basket underneath.

After struggling to stay with Chico State on opening night in a 75-53 loss, the Falcons started on the front foot. They punished the Broncos' mistakes, scoring 14 off seven turnovers and leading by as many as 15.

While Cal Poly missed its first eight shots from the floor, SPU was clicking on offense, moving the ball and alternating between open 3s and attacking gaps in the visitors' zone. Back-to-back short-range jumpers by Moffitt made it 11-2. Cavell, who had been limited to four points by Chico, accumulated 12 by halftime, half coming off treys from the left corner.

Seattle Pacific will host Stanislaus State on Tuesday afternoon, a rare weekday afternoon start of 3:30 p.m. After that, the next six contests are on the road.

In Saturday's first game, Azusa Pacific defeated Chico State in overtime, 97-91.
