SAN DIEGO, Calif.  – Seattle Pacific's varsity eight crew raced to a berth in Sunday's grand final at the San Diego Crew Classic and also on Saturday two Falcons crews posted runner-up results at the Covered Bridge Regatta on Dexter Lake.

CREW CLASSIC

The NCAA Division II Falcons' premier crew claimed the third, and final, qualifying spot from its heat against a fast field of Division I competitors. They will race 10 a.m. Sunday at Mission Bay in the grand final of the UCSD Health varsity eight event against Georgetown, Sacramento State, San Diego, Drexel and Loyola Marymount.

Needing a top-three finish to advance, SPU settled into the third position early and never relinquished it despite strong challenges from Fordham and Saint Mary's (Calif.).

Georgetown led the majority of the race, leading Sacramento by three seats at the midway mark while the Hornets were half a length ahead of SPU. The Falcons were bow-to-stern with fourth-place Fordham at that point, but Saint Mary's soon claimed the No. 4 position.

The Gaels were pressing SPU with 500 meters to go, but were held off.

The winning time of 6-minutes, 47.89-seconds gave Georgetown a six-seat edge over Sacramento's runner-up time of 6:49.36 and the Falcons were three seats out of second and eight seats in front of fourth.

Seattle Pacific completed the 2,000-meter course in 6:50.57 to place third with SMC fourth (6:53.14) and Fordham fifth (7:04.12).

San Diego (6:39.59), Drexel (6:40.00) and Loyola Marymount (6:41.59) finished one-two-three in the other heat to earn finals spots. The Falcons' Division II rival UC San Diego, ranked No. 3 nationally, finished fifth in 6:51.13 and failed to advance. SPU is tied for fifth in the Division II national poll.

The Falcons' varsity eight crew is directed by junior coxswain Jacqueline Kemp with San Diego native Chloe Remley rowing in the stroke seat.

Covered Bridge Regatta

Seattle Pacific's top four-oared crew registered a third-place result in the varsity event. They earned the grand finals berth by virtue of a second-place effort in Saturday morning's heats, with a time of 8:11.08.

Crews from Oregon State finished one-two in the championship race with times of 7:53.42 and 8:02.76. The Falcons' third-place mark of 8:14.43 gave them a near 10-second advantage over Seattle University's fourth-place time of 8:23.93. Southern Oregon finished fifth (8:45.86) and Lewis & Clark sixth (9:07.57).

The lineup for SPU's varsity four was Amanda Larsen, Samantha Kimmel, Brooklyn Liberato and Talia Ferguson with Roxy Ruther as the coxswain.

In the novice fours event, OSU and Seattle Pacific were the class of the field. They squared off in a heat race with the Beavers (7:59.03) getting an open-water victory over SPU (8:04.71).

The Beavers also won the rematch, but by a much narrower margin. Their grand final winning time of 8:01.44 was more than two seconds slower than in the heats.

The first-year Falcons were faster in the afternoon, shaving over two seconds off their heat time with a mark of 8:02.76. That put them just three seats back of the winners. SPU outraced a trio of Division I foes by over half a minute. Portland was a distant third in 8:39.27, followed by Santa Clara (8:44.71) and Washington State (9:16.01).

Saturday marked the maiden voyages for SPU's novice four, comprised of student-athletes in the first year in the program. Freshman LeeAnn Arrington helmed the crew that featured rowers Danielle Johnson, Emily Geringer, Anna White and Avalon Tarbet-Mendoza.

There were two boats representing the Falcons in the second varsity fours event, which also ended up with a battle against Oregon State.

SPU's primary second varsity crew won the heat race in 8:00.66, eight seconds faster than the Beavers.

OSU turned the tables in the grand final with an open-water victory and a winning time of 7:56.89. The Falcons were second in 8:02.97, well ahead of third-place Portland. The Pilots finished 27 seconds after SPU, in 8:32.10. Humboldt State was fourth (8:34.87) and the Falcons second entry placed fifth in 8:41.87, well ahead of Lewis & Clark (9:05.76).

Coxswain Cecilia Krause led SPU's runner-up crew, comprised of rowers Katy Beth Smith, Tamyra Clark-Hoogstrate, Madison Simmons and Haley Thompson.

The other Falcons entry was coxed by Kelly Long with Larissa Schuermyer, Lakyn Coppedge, Clara Ingraham and Katy Graham pulling oars. The bow pair of Graham and Ingraham are both graduate's of Seattle's Ballard High School, located just two miles north of the Seattle Pacific campus.
