SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific varsity eight-oared crew, ranked fifth nationally among NCAA Division II teams, placed third in the Cascade Cup race, and the second varsity eight won the Collegiate Open 8 on Saturday at the Windermere Cup Regatta.
The University of Washington-hosted event on the Montlake Cut is one of the world's premier rowing showcases. This was the Falcons' third straight appearance in the competition that celebrates the opening day of boating season in the Northwest. They had a five-year absence from the regatta between 2012-16 due to scheduling conflicts.
The varsity eight completed its 2,000 meters in 6 minutes, 50.161 seconds. That was three seconds ahead No. 4-ranked Western Washington, which clocked 6:53.057.
The UW's third varsity won the race in 6:39.835, and UCLA's second varsity was next in 6:43.775.
Seattle Pacific was in front of Western Washington at all three intermediate markers: 1.4 seconds at the 500, then 4½ seconds at the 1,000 and 4.9 seconds at 1,500.
The Falcons thus turned the tables on the Vikings after last week's Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships in California. WWU was fourth in that grand final on Lake Natoma; SPU placed fifth.
The SPU varsity eight featured six members of crew that rowed to a runner-up result in the third varsity event at last season's Windermere Cup: coxswain
Jacqueline Kemp along with rowers
Chloe Remley,
Suzanne Stafford,
Gillian Edgar,
Amanda Larsen and
Kaitlin Dickinson.
Those six were joined by rowers
Megan Chalfant,
Julienne Renne and
Shelby Janes.
In the Collegiate Open 8 race, the Falcons trailed Seattle University's lead varsity eight by seven-tenths of a second at 500 meters. But by the 1,000, they had gone by 1.2 seconds, and had an open-water margin of four seconds with 500 meters to go.
At the finish, SPU was five seconds clear of the Redhawks, 7:05.477 to 7:10.854.
Directing the Falcons' second varsity was coxswain
Cecilia Krause. Pulling oars were stroke
Brooklyn Liberato,
Samantha Kimmel,
Tamyra Clark-Hoogstrate,
Jennifer Hoag,
Talia Ferguson,
Danielle Johnson,
Gracie Hoidal and
Madison Simmons.
The SPU crews take a week off from competition before visiting Oklahoma City for the UCO Tri-Duel. The Falcons will face defending national champion Central Oklahoma, currently listed atop the national poll, and No. 7 Barry on the Oklahoma River.
