SEATTLE -- Nearly 400 athletes, representing 25 schools, will be in town for the Seattle Pacific Final Qualifier on Saturday at the University of Washington's Dempsey Indoor.
Competition will begin at 4:30 p.m. Live results will be available by clicking on the link at the top of this story.
The meet will include athletes from across all three NCAA divisions and serves as one last chance to get onto the national qualifying list or to improve one's status on that list.
Among those in the "improve their status" category are SPU senior
Kate Lilly and junior
Dania Holmberg. They went 1-2 in the 3000 meters at last week's Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships in Nampa, Idaho. Lilly posted a time of 9 minutes, 47.88 seconds; Holmberg was right on her heels in 9:47.95.
Lilly is currently 20
th nationally and Holmberg is 22
nd. The NCAA has a "desired minimum" of 16 competitors in each individual event, with a maximum of 20 per event and 270 total athletes (per gender) for the entire meet.
After all entries are submitted (the deadline is next Monday, March 2), the selection committee will determine which events, if any, receive additional entries in order to reach 270 total athletes. No event is guaranteed more than the desired minimum.
Last year, nine of the 14 individual events received additional entries beyond desired minimum. Of those nine events, six – including the 3000 – received the maximum of 20. The last time into the 3000 was 9:45.02.
Heading into the weekend, the current No. 16 time is 9:43.73., with Lilly's 9:47.85 sitting at No. 20.
